Understanding BIP and STEP file formats

The BIP file format is a proprietary format used by KeyShot, a 3D rendering and animation software. It contains 3D models, materials, textures, lighting information, and other settings used in KeyShot scenes. On the other hand, STEP (Standard for the Exchange of Product Data) is a widely used file format for 3D models. It is an ISO standard that includes the geometric data, color and texture, and often also kinematics and other metadata.

Why convert BIP to STEP?

Converting a BIP file to STEP can be useful when you need to share your 3D models with others who do not use KeyShot. The STEP format is more universally accepted and can be opened by a variety of 3D CAD software.

How to convert BIP to STEP

Unfortunately, a direct conversion from BIP to STEP is not typically possible as BIP is a proprietary format of KeyShot and contains rendering information, not just the 3D model data. However, you can export the 3D model data from KeyShot to a different format (such as OBJ or FBX), and then use a separate tool to convert that file to STEP.

Recommended software for conversion

For exporting the 3D model from KeyShot, you can use the built-in export function. Navigate to File → Export → Geometry in KeyShot and choose the desired format. For the second step of the conversion, a tool like FreeCAD or AutoCAD can be used to convert the exported file to STEP. In FreeCAD, you can import the file and then use File → Export to save it as a STEP file.
