Sat to step conversion
SAT files are ACIS solid model files, and STEP files (.stp, .step) are neutral CAD exchange files. In many CAD and 3D modeling programs, you can convert sat to step by opening the SAT file and using File → Save As or File → Export to write a STEP file, as long as the software supports both formats.
How to convert sat to step
1. Open the .sat file in a CAD application that can read ACIS geometry.
2. Choose File → Save As or File → Export.
3. Select STEP as the output format.
4. If available, choose the STEP application protocol, such as AP203, AP214, or AP242.
5. Save the converted file with a .stp or .step extension.
Important notes
Direct conversion is not always available. Some programs can open SAT files but cannot export STEP, or they may need a translator, add-on, or separate conversion tool.
Geometry usually transfers better than metadata. STEP is good for exchanging solid geometry and assemblies, but color, layers, names, and product structure may not be preserved exactly the same way in every program.
Units and healing matter. If the converted model looks wrong, check units, repair or healing options, and export settings before saving.
File extensions: SAT files usually use .sat. STEP files commonly use .stp or .step.
When a direct export is not possible
If your CAD software can open the SAT file but does not export STEP, try a different CAD package or a dedicated CAD translator that supports both formats. In some workflows, opening the model in the original system and then exporting to STEP gives the best results.
Tips for better results
For complex solids, compare the converted STEP file against the original SAT model to confirm that faces, edges, and assemblies transferred correctly. If the file is only for viewing or sharing, make sure STEP is the right neutral format for your downstream system.
