Many applications, scripts, terminals, and archive systems accept only unformatted plain-text files, so an AsciiDoc document may need conversion before distribution or import. Converting it to TXT preserves readable content but removes headings, links, tables, emphasis, and other markup unless they are represented as plain characters.

What the ASCIIDOC format is

AsciiDoc is a lightweight markup format for writing documentation, manuals, articles, and README files in ordinary characters. Authors commonly save it with .adoc, .asciidoc, or sometimes .asc extensions. AsciiDoc processors such as Asciidoctor and the original AsciiDoc command-line tool turn its headings, lists, links, source blocks, tables, and attributes into HTML, PDF, DocBook, or man pages. Code editors, documentation repositories, and software projects frequently contain these files.

What the TXT format is

TXT is a plain-text format containing characters without embedded document styling, layout instructions, or application-specific metadata. It works with text editors, command-line tools, email systems, scripts, older devices, and archive workflows. TXT files are small, portable, and easy to process, but they cannot retain clickable links, font styles, images, table structure, or most AsciiDoc layout features.

How to convert ASCIIDOC to TXT

Convert online

You can convert the file for free on 101convert.com without installing software: open the ASCIIDOC to TXT converter, upload the .adoc file, start the conversion, and download the generated .txt file. Review the result if the source contains tables, attributes, includes, or custom macros.

Convert with Pandoc

Pandoc can produce a plain-text representation when the installed version supports the AsciiDoc reader:

  1. Install Pandoc from its official desktop package or package manager.
  2. Open a terminal in the directory containing the source file.
  3. Run pandoc input.adoc -f asciidoc -t plain -o output.txt.
  4. Open output.txt in a plain-text editor and check headings, lists, tables, and code blocks.

If Pandoc reports that asciidoc is not a supported input format, render the source to HTML with Asciidoctor and convert that HTML to plain text:

asciidoctor -b html5 -o output.html input.adoc
pandoc output.html -f html -t plain -o output.txt

Asciidoctor must be installed for the first command; the second command uses Pandoc to remove HTML markup while retaining the rendered reading order.

Quality and compatibility

This conversion is inherently lossy. AsciiDoc emphasis becomes ordinary characters, links usually become their visible labels or URL text, images cannot appear in TXT, and complex tables may become irregular lines. AsciiDoc attributes, conditional sections, and included files are processed only when the converter can resolve them; supply the correct working directory and any required include paths.

For predictable results, use UTF-8 for both files and inspect characters such as em dashes, nonbreaking spaces, and accented letters after conversion. If the target program expects old Windows line endings, convert the output to CRLF; Unix and Linux tools normally use LF. Avoid manually renaming .adoc to .txt, because changing the extension does not remove AsciiDoc markup.
