What the ASCIIDOC format is
AsciiDoc is a plain-text markup format for structured documents such as software manuals, release notes, books, specifications, and README files. Files commonly use .adoc or .asciidoc extensions and can be created with any text editor, an IDE, or documentation systems based on Asciidoctor.
AsciiDoc stores headings, lists, tables, links, source-code blocks, images, admonitions, attributes, and cross-references as readable text. Asciidoctor is the most widely used converter and can generate HTML, DocBook, PDF through additional tools, and other output formats.
What the DOCX format is
DOCX is the XML-based document format used by Microsoft Word and supported by LibreOffice Writer, OnlyOffice, and other office applications. It is suited to word-processing workflows that require editable paragraphs, styles, tables, comments, tracked changes, headers, footers, and page-oriented printing.
DOCX is preferable when recipients need to revise the document visually, apply Word templates, add review comments, or submit a file to a system that does not accept plain-text markup. Unlike AsciiDoc, DOCX does not preserve the source markup as the primary editing interface.
How to actually convert ASCIIDOC to DOCX
Using Asciidoctor and Pandoc
The most controllable desktop method is to render AsciiDoc as DocBook with Asciidoctor, then convert the DocBook file to DOCX with Pandoc.
- Install Asciidoctor and Pandoc. With Ruby installed, Asciidoctor can be installed using
gem install asciidoctor. Install Pandoc from its official desktop package for your operating system. - Open a terminal in the directory containing the source file and generate DocBook 5:
asciidoctor -b docbook5 -o manual.xml manual.adoc
- Convert the intermediate file to DOCX:
pandoc manual.xml -o manual.docx
- Open
manual.docxin Word or LibreOffice Writer and check headings, tables, images, code blocks, page breaks, and links before distributing it.
For a Word template, provide a reference DOCX containing the desired styles:
pandoc manual.xml --reference-doc=company-template.docx -o manual.docx
Keep images available at the relative paths used by the AsciiDoc source. If the source uses attributes or includes, run Asciidoctor from the project directory so those files can be resolved. A document with multiple source files can first be assembled with an include:: directive, then processed using the same commands.
Using the online converter
You can convert the file for free on 101convert.com without installing software: upload the ASCIIDOC file, choose DOCX as the output format, start the conversion, and download the generated document. Review the result after downloading, particularly if the source contains local images, includes, custom Asciidoctor extensions, or diagrams.
Quality and compatibility limitations
The intermediate DocBook step preserves standard document structure better than copying rendered HTML into Word, but it cannot reproduce every Asciidoctor feature. Custom extensions, passthrough blocks, conditional content, complex attribute logic, diagram processors, specialized admonition styling, and some macros may be omitted or converted to ordinary text.
DOCX uses page layout and Word styles, while AsciiDoc primarily describes semantic structure. Expect to adjust margins, fonts, table widths, syntax highlighting, image sizes, captions, headers, footers, and page breaks in the resulting DOCX. Source-code blocks and tables are especially worth checking because long lines and wide columns can overflow the page.
Links and basic headings generally convert well. Cross-references, footnotes, embedded media, and relative image paths depend on the Asciidoctor and Pandoc versions and on how the source is organized. Keep the original .adoc file as the authoritative source if the document will continue to be maintained.
