A BIBTEX file is useful for storing references but is not convenient for editing or sharing with people who use Microsoft Word. Converting it to DOCX produces an editable document containing the bibliography or formatted citation content.

What the BIBTEX format is

BIBTEX is a plain-text bibliographic database format, usually saved with the .bib extension. Each entry contains fields such as author, title, journal, year, doi, and url, identified by a citation key:

@article{smith2024,
  author  = {Smith, Jane},
  title   = {Example research paper},
  journal = {Example Journal},
  year    = {2024}
}

LaTeX projects commonly create and use BIBTEX files with BibTeX or Biber. Reference managers such as Zotero, JabRef, Mendeley, and EndNote can import or export them. You encounter .bib files when exchanging research libraries, preparing academic papers, or managing citations in Overleaf and other LaTeX editors.

What the DOCX format is

DOCX is the XML-based word-processing format used by Microsoft Word and supported by LibreOffice Writer, Apple Pages, and other office software. It stores formatted paragraphs, headings, tables, page settings, styles, images, and document metadata.

DOCX is suitable when the references must be edited manually, inserted into a Word manuscript, reviewed with tracked changes, printed, or shared with users who do not use LaTeX or reference-management software. Unlike BIBTEX, DOCX is primarily a presentation format rather than a structured citation database.

How to convert BIBTEX to DOCX

Convert it online on 101convert.com

  1. Open the BIBTEX-to-DOCX converter on 101convert.com.
  2. Upload the .bib file or select it from your device.
  3. Choose DOCX as the output format and start the conversion.
  4. Download the generated DOCX file and open it in Word or LibreOffice Writer.

This method requires no installed software and is appropriate for a quick editable export. Check the resulting bibliography because a converter may output database entries as a plain list rather than apply a journal-specific citation style.

Generate a DOCX manuscript with Pandoc

Pandoc is useful when the BIBTEX file supports citations in a Markdown manuscript. Create a Markdown file such as paper.md containing citation keys, for example [@smith2024], then run:

pandoc paper.md --bibliography=references.bib --citeproc -o paper.docx

Pandoc reads the references from references.bib, formats cited items with its default CSL style, and writes the manuscript and bibliography to paper.docx. To select a citation style, add a CSL file:

pandoc paper.md --bibliography=references.bib --csl=apa.csl --citeproc -o paper.docx

This workflow requires Pandoc and a correctly formatted input document. It does not automatically place every record from the BIBTEX database into the bibliography; only cited records are included unless the source document explicitly cites all entries.

Export a bibliography from a reference manager

For a bibliography-only DOCX file, import the BIBTEX file into Zotero or JabRef, select the required records, and use the program's bibliography or formatted-copy function. Paste the result into Word, or use the Word integration supplied by the reference manager. Select the required style, such as APA, MLA, Chicago, or a journal-specific CSL style, before exporting or pasting.

Quality and compatibility limitations

BIBTEX stores bibliographic data, while DOCX stores formatted output, so the conversion is not fully reversible. Citation keys, entry types, custom fields, cross-references, database organization, and BibTeX-specific commands may be lost or displayed as ordinary text.

Review author names, capitalization, accents, page ranges, dates, DOI links, and LaTeX markup after conversion. Commands such as \LaTeX, protected capitalization using braces, and special character escapes may require manual correction. Use UTF-8 input where possible, and verify the bibliography against the required citation style before submitting or publishing the DOCX document.
