An AD file may need conversion when its source code or plain-text content must be reviewed, annotated, or shared with software that accepts Microsoft Word documents. DOCX adds editable document structure, page layout, comments, and broader compatibility than a raw text file.
What the AD format is
In the Text files category, .ad generally identifies a plain-text source file associated with the Ada programming language or an application-specific text document. Ada projects more commonly use .ads for package specifications and .adb for package bodies, so an .ad file can also be a project-specific naming convention rather than a universally standardized format.
An AD file normally contains readable characters, line breaks, indentation, comments, and possibly programming syntax. It does not normally contain page layout, embedded Word styles, tracked changes, or other DOCX document features. Open it with a text editor to verify the content before converting; changing the extension to .docx does not perform a conversion.
What the DOCX format is
DOCX is the XML-based document format used by Microsoft Word and supported by LibreOffice Writer, OnlyOffice, and many document-management systems. It stores paragraphs, styles, tables, images, headers, footers, page settings, comments, and other structured document data inside a ZIP-based package.
DOCX is appropriate when the converted content needs word-processing features, printed pagination, review comments, or compatibility with recipients who cannot work with source files. It is less suitable when the requirement is exact compiler input, because Word processors can alter whitespace, line wrapping, quotation marks, and other characters that may matter in source code.
How to actually convert AD to DOCX
Using the online converter
- Open the AD-to-DOCX converter on 101convert.com.
- Select the
.adfile and choose DOCX as the output format. - Start the conversion, then download the generated
.docxfile. - Open the result in Word or LibreOffice Writer and check indentation, line breaks, symbols, and non-ASCII characters.
This method requires no installed software and is suitable for ordinary, non-confidential files. Do not upload source code or documents subject to confidentiality rules unless the applicable privacy and retention terms permit it.
Using LibreOffice Writer
- Open LibreOffice Writer and choose File → Open.
- Set the file filter to Text if LibreOffice does not identify the AD file automatically.
- In the import dialog, select the character encoding used by the file, usually UTF-8, and verify the preview. Choose the correct line-break option if the source was created on Windows, macOS, or Linux.
- For source code, select the imported content and apply a monospaced font such as Liberation Mono. Use a small fixed font size and disable automatic typographic replacements if exact characters matter.
- Choose File → Save As, select Word 2007–365 (*.docx), and save the result.
Using Pandoc
Pandoc can create a DOCX from AD content when the file is ordinary plain text:
pandoc input.ad --from=plain --to=docx --output=output.docx
Plain-text conversion may treat blank lines as paragraph boundaries and may reflow lines. For code listings, first place the content inside a fenced code block in a temporary Markdown file, then run:
pandoc source.md --from=markdown --to=docx --output=output.docx
Review the generated document because Pandoc converts text structure, not compiler-specific AD syntax.
Quality and compatibility limitations
The conversion is usually a text repackaging rather than a rich-format transformation: an AD file has little or no layout metadata for the converter to preserve. Tabs may become spaces, long lines may wrap visually, and the selected encoding determines whether accented or non-Latin characters survive correctly.
Keep the original AD file as the authoritative source. If the DOCX is intended for compilation or later editing as code, copy from the original rather than from the Word document, and check characters such as straight quotes, minus signs, tabs, and trailing spaces. DOCX is also unsuitable for preserving executable permissions, compiler metadata, directory structure, or project relationships.
