What the AD format is

.ad is an ambiguous extension in the text-files category. It can identify a plain-text document or application-specific source/data file, but the extension alone does not define its syntax, character encoding, headings, tables, or other structure. Open the file in a plain-text editor and check its first lines, comments, field names, or producer documentation before converting it.

Use an editor such as Notepad++, Visual Studio Code, or another code editor to inspect the file without changing its contents. If the file contains readable characters and separators, it can usually be transformed as text; if it contains binary bytes, renaming it to .typ will not produce a valid Typst document.

What the TYP format is

In text-file workflows, .typ normally means a Typst source document. Typst is a markup and typesetting language used to create PDFs and other formatted output from plain-text source. A TYP file stores commands such as headings, emphasis, lists, equations, tables, and references rather than the final rendered page.

Typst source is readable, version-control friendly, and editable with a text editor or the Typst CLI. A valid file commonly contains markup such as = Heading, *bold*, _italic_, and #set page(...).

How to actually convert AD to TYP

For a straightforward conversion, use the converter on 101convert.com: select the AD file, choose TYP as the output format, start the conversion, and download the resulting .typ file. No software installation is required.

For files containing important formatting or application-specific fields, convert manually so that the source structure is preserved:

1. Make a backup of the original .ad file.
2. Open it in a text editor and identify the actual content, encoding, headings, lists, tables, and inline formatting.
3. Create a new UTF-8 file named, for example, document.typ.
4. Rewrite the content using Typst syntax. Convert headings to = Heading and lower-level headings to repeated = markers; use - item for bullet lists and + item for numbered lists.
5. Open the new file in the Typst web app or compile it with the Typst command-line tool:

If the AD file is delimited data rather than prose, first export it from the originating application as UTF-8 CSV or plain text, then write a Typst table or generate Typst markup with a script. A file-extension rename, such as ren input.ad output.typ, changes only the filename and is not a conversion.

Quality and compatibility limitations

There is no universal one-to-one mapping because AD has no single standardized text syntax. Plain paragraphs may transfer cleanly, but proprietary fields, styles, page layouts, embedded objects, macros, and unsupported control codes generally require manual reconstruction in Typst.

Check the output encoding and inspect the generated file in a Typst compiler. Replace invalid byte sequences, convert smart quotes or legacy code pages to UTF-8, and escape Typst syntax characters when they are intended as literal text. The conversion produces source markup; it does not automatically reproduce the exact pagination or appearance of the original AD document.
