What the AD format is

In text-file conversion catalogs, .ad commonly identifies an Ada-related source or definition file. Ada development tools, including GNAT and other Ada compilers or editors, can create these files; standard Ada projects more often use .adb for package bodies and .ads for package specifications, so the .ad extension is not a universal Ada standard.

An AD file is usually plain text containing source code, declarations, configuration data, or structured definitions. A text editor can open it, but the extension alone does not guarantee a single internal format. Confirm the file's contents before conversion: readable code can be converted as text, whereas a proprietary or binary file renamed with an AD extension needs its original application.

What the EPUB format is

EPUB is a ZIP-based ebook format containing XHTML documents, stylesheets, metadata, and an optional table of contents. Its reflowable layout adapts to screen size, font settings, and orientation, making it suitable for phones, tablets, dedicated readers, and ebook-management software.

EPUB is useful when the AD file should be read as documentation or reference material rather than compiled. It supports headings, paragraphs, code blocks, hyperlinks, images, and navigation, but it does not preserve Ada project behavior or make source code executable.

How to actually convert AD to EPUB

Quality, compatibility, and limitations

There is no single EPUB mapping for AD files because .ad is not a broadly standardized ebook or document format. The converter can package textual content, but it cannot infer whether identifiers are headings, comments, code, or configuration values.

Use a monospaced font and code blocks for Ada source, and inspect characters such as <, >, &, quotation marks, and non-ASCII identifiers after conversion. Validate the EPUB with an EPUB checker if it will be submitted to a publisher or library; test it in at least one reflowable reader because code wrapping and CSS support vary between devices.
