What the AD format is

In the Text files category, AD usually identifies an AsciiDoc source document. AsciiDoc stores headings, lists, links, code blocks, tables, notes, and other structure as plain-text markup; Asciidoctor and the original AsciiDoc processor create and read these files. The conventional extensions are .adoc and .asciidoc, but shorter .ad filenames are also used.

An AD file is source rather than a finished page layout. Its appearance depends on the converter and stylesheet used to render it, so opening it in a basic text editor shows markup such as heading markers and list syntax.

What the ODT format is

ODT is the OpenDocument Text format, a ZIP-based package containing XML document content, styles, metadata, and optionally embedded images. LibreOffice Writer, Apache OpenOffice Writer, Calligra Words, and many other office applications can edit it.

ODT is suitable when recipients need word-processing features such as page styles, headers, tables, tracked edits, and print-oriented formatting without depending on a proprietary office format.

How to actually convert AD to ODT

The simplest method is the free converter on 101convert.com: upload the .ad file, select ODT as the output format, start the conversion, and download the resulting .odt file. No software installation is required.

For a local, command-line workflow, first convert AsciiDoc to DocBook with Asciidoctor, then convert DocBook to ODT with Pandoc:

asciidoctor -b docbook5 -o document.xml document.ad
pandoc document.xml -f docbook -o document.odt

Install Asciidoctor and Pandoc through their official packages before running these commands. Replace document.ad with the actual source filename. If the AD file includes images, keep the referenced image files in their expected relative locations and check the output after conversion.

For a graphical workflow, generate an intermediate DOCX or HTML file with Asciidoctor or another AsciiDoc processor, open it in LibreOffice Writer, then choose File → Save As, select ODF Text Document (.odt), and save.

Quality and compatibility

Conversion interprets AsciiDoc markup; it does not reproduce a pre-existing page layout because AD source normally has no fixed layout. Basic headings, paragraphs, lists, links, tables, and code blocks generally transfer well, while custom themes, CSS, macros, extensions, embedded diagrams, conditional content, and complex DocBook attributes may require manual correction.

Check image paths, table widths, page breaks, footnotes, syntax highlighting, and included files in the ODT after conversion. AsciiDoc include:: directives may need to be expanded or made available to the converter, and unsafe or missing external references can produce incomplete output.
