ASCIIDOC files are convenient for source-controlled documentation, but many office applications require the OpenDocument Text format for editing or delivery. Converting to ODT preserves the document as an editable word-processing file that LibreOffice and other OpenDocument-compatible programs can open.

What the ASCIIDOC format is

AsciiDoc is a lightweight markup format for writing structured documents in plain text. Authors use markup such as headings, lists, links, tables, admonitions, source-code blocks, and attributes instead of storing formatting directly in a word-processing file.

Files commonly use the .adoc or .asciidoc extension. Asciidoctor and Asciidoc create and process these files, and they frequently appear in software documentation, README files, technical manuals, and documentation repositories managed with Git.

What the ODT format is

ODT is the OpenDocument Text format, a ZIP-based document format defined by the OpenDocument standard. It stores editable text, paragraph and character styles, tables, images, metadata, and page-layout information.

LibreOffice Writer opens and edits ODT files directly; Apache OpenOffice and other OpenDocument-compatible applications can also read them. ODT is useful when recipients need a paginated document with editable formatting rather than markup source.

How to actually convert ASCIIDOC to ODT

The most reliable desktop workflow uses Asciidoctor to produce DocBook XML, then Pandoc to create the ODT file.

  1. Install Asciidoctor and Pandoc. With Ruby installed, Asciidoctor can be installed using gem install asciidoctor; install Pandoc from its official desktop package for your operating system.
  2. Open a terminal in the directory containing the source file.
  3. Convert the AsciiDoc source to DocBook 5 XML:
    asciidoctor -b docbook5 -o intermediate.xml input.adoc
  4. Convert the intermediate XML file to ODT:
    pandoc -f docbook -t odt intermediate.xml -o output.odt
  5. Open output.odt in LibreOffice Writer and check headings, tables, images, page breaks, footnotes, and code blocks.

For an AsciiDoc file with images or included files, run the commands from the source directory so relative paths resolve correctly. If the source uses an attribute, pass it to Asciidoctor with an option such as -a toc= or define it in the document header.

If you do not want to install software, you can convert the file for free on 101convert.com using its ASCIIDOC-to-ODT converter.

Quality and compatibility limitations

The conversion passes through two format models, so AsciiDoc-specific features may not map exactly to ODT. Basic headings, paragraphs, emphasis, lists, links, tables, images, and code blocks generally transfer, while complex roles, custom Asciidoctor themes, extensions, conditional content, macros, and advanced admonition styling may require manual adjustment.

AsciiDoc source describes structure; ODT also requires page styles, fonts, margins, headers, footers, and pagination. Pandoc applies its own document defaults, so inspect the result in LibreOffice and modify styles rather than relying on the original AsciiDoc appearance. Embed or install required fonts before final export if consistent pagination matters.

Keep the intermediate XML until validation is complete. It helps identify whether a problem originated in Asciidoctor's parsing stage or Pandoc's ODT writer.
