What the ASCIIDOC format is
AsciiDoc is a plain-text markup format for technical documentation, manuals, README files, books, and websites. Files commonly use .adoc or .asciidoc extensions and are authored with Asciidoctor, the original AsciiDoc processor, documentation systems such as Antora, or any text editor.
AsciiDoc supports hierarchical headings, attributes, cross-references, tables, admonitions, source-code listings, images, includes, conditionals, and block extensions. Its syntax is more expressive than basic lightweight markup, but several of those features have no direct Org equivalent.
What the ORG format is
Org is a plain-text markup format associated with Emacs Org mode. Org files use the .org extension and combine structured headings with TODO states, tags, properties, tables, source blocks, links, citations, scheduling, and agenda data.
Org is useful when the converted document will be edited in Emacs, queried with Org agenda or search tools, exported to HTML or PDF, or maintained as part of a literate-programming project. Its heading syntax uses asterisks, source blocks use #+BEGIN_SRC and #+END_SRC, and links use Org-style bracket notation.
How to actually convert ASCIIDOC to ORG
The most reliable desktop workflow is Asciidoctor followed by Pandoc. Asciidoctor resolves AsciiDoc syntax and includes, while Pandoc converts the resulting DocBook structure to Org.
- Install Asciidoctor and Pandoc using packages appropriate for your operating system.
- From the directory containing the source file, generate DocBook and pipe it into Pandoc:
asciidoctor -b docbook5 -o - input.adoc | pandoc -f docbook -t org -o output.org
The command reads input.adoc, writes Asciidoctor's DocBook output to standard output, and saves the Org result as output.org. Replace the filenames as needed; use the same working directory when the document contains relative image or include paths.
For a multi-stage workflow, save the intermediate file so you can inspect it:
asciidoctor -b docbook5 -o intermediate.xml input.adoc
pandoc -f docbook -t org intermediate.xml -o output.org
Open output.org in Emacs and check heading levels, links, source-language names, tables, image paths, and any Org metadata that should be added manually. For a no-install conversion, use the free converter on 101convert.com and download the resulting .org file.
Quality and compatibility limitations
Structural content usually converts well, but AsciiDoc attributes, conditional sections, custom roles, passthrough blocks, diagram extensions, and processor-specific macros may be omitted or reduced to ordinary text. Asciidoctor expands standard includes during the first command, but included files must be available and referenced with usable relative paths.
AsciiDoc admonitions and styled blocks may not map to native Org constructs; review them after conversion. Tables can require manual alignment or rewriting, and image references remain dependent on the original asset files. DocBook is an intermediate representation, so AsciiDoc styling and backend-specific behavior are not preserved exactly.
If the source uses custom Asciidoctor extensions, convert a representative sample first and compare the generated Org file with the original before processing a larger document set.
