JPG (or JPEG) is a widely used raster image format created by the Joint Photographic Experts Group. It is the standard choice for photographs, screenshots, web images, and camera output because it offers strong compression and small file sizes. JPG is supported by nearly every device, browser, and image editor, but it is lossy, so repeated saving can reduce image quality.

Target format

ORG is the file format used by Org mode, a plain-text markup system popular with Emacs users for notes, task management, documentation, and literate programming. An ORG file is not an image format; it is a text document that can contain headings, lists, links, tables, code blocks, and references to embedded or linked images. Converting JPG to ORG usually means creating an Org document that references the image or includes it as an attachment, rather than turning the picture into editable text.

How to perform the conversion

The best approach depends on what you want the ORG file to contain:

1. Create an Org document that displays the JPG

This is the most common and practical method. Create a new plain-text file with the .org extension and add an image link:

If the image is in the same folder as the ORG file, this is enough for Org mode to display it in Emacs.

2. Add descriptive text around the image

You can build a note or document that includes the image plus captions, metadata, or commentary:

3. Use Emacs or a text editor to save the file

Open a plain-text editor such as Emacs, VS Code, or Notepad++, paste the Org markup, and save it as filename.org. In Emacs, you can also use File → Save As and choose the .org extension.

For many images, generate an Org file with one image link per line. For example:

Notes on quality and limitations

JPG to ORG is not a visual conversion in the usual sense. Because ORG is a text-based format, the image itself is not transformed into editable Org content. Instead, the result is typically an Org document that links to or embeds the JPG.

If you move the ORG file without the JPG, the image link may break unless the image is copied along with it or the path is updated. For best compatibility, keep the JPG in the same directory as the ORG file and use a relative link such as [[file:photo.jpg]].

If your goal is to extract text from the image, you need OCR software first; JPG-to-ORG conversion alone will not recognize text inside the picture. Also, Org mode image display works best in Emacs; other editors may show the markup as plain text.
