Convert CRYPT14 to DOC

A WhatsApp chat may need to be edited, printed, submitted as evidence, or retained in a document-management system that accepts Microsoft Word files. A .crypt14 backup cannot be opened in Word directly; its messages must first be restored or decrypted and exported as readable text.

CRYPT14 and DOC formats

CRYPT14 is an encrypted local WhatsApp message-database backup used by WhatsApp on Android. A typical file is named msgstore.db.crypt14; it contains an encrypted WhatsApp database, not a document or plain-text chat transcript.

On current Android installations, local backups are commonly stored under Android/media/com.whatsapp/WhatsApp/Databases. Older installations may use WhatsApp/Databases; WhatsApp Business uses a different app folder.

Decrypting a CRYPT14 file requires the matching encryption key from the same WhatsApp installation that created it. The phone number, WhatsApp account, Google account, backup filename, or a renamed extension cannot decrypt it. If the original app installation was deleted, the device reset, or the key is unavailable, recovery is usually not possible from the CRYPT14 file alone.

DOC is the legacy Microsoft Word binary format used by Word 97–2003. It is appropriate only when a recipient or older system specifically requires .doc. For normal editing and better Unicode, image, and compatibility support, use .docx unless DOC is mandatory.

Best method: export the chat from WhatsApp

If the chat is still visible in WhatsApp, use WhatsApp's export function instead of attempting to decrypt a backup. On Android, open the chat and select ⋮ → More → Export chat, then choose whether to include media. WhatsApp produces a readable .txt transcript; exports with media may also include or package the associated attachment files.

1. Copy the exported transcript to a computer.
2. Open the .txt file in Microsoft Word or LibreOffice Writer. Select the correct text encoding if prompted.
3. Apply headings, page breaks, or other required formatting.
4. In Word, use File → Save As and select Word 97–2003 Document (*.doc). In LibreOffice Writer, use File → Save As → Word 97–2003 (.doc) and accept the format warning.

LibreOffice is a free desktop option. Word generally handles fonts, emoji, and right-to-left text better, but neither application can turn a CRYPT14 database into a document without first making its contents readable.

When only a CRYPT14 backup remains

First keep an untouched copy of msgstore.db.crypt14. The safest recovery route is restoring the local backup through WhatsApp on an authorized device with the same account, then exporting the required chats from the restored app. Do not reinstall, clear WhatsApp storage, or overwrite the backup until copies have been made.

If a matching key has been lawfully extracted from the original installation, specialist recovery or forensic software may be able to decrypt the database and export messages as HTML, CSV, or text. There is no reliable one-click CRYPT14-to-DOC converter. Tools made for older CRYPT12 databases, including older releases of WhatsApp Viewer, should not be assumed to support CRYPT14 or current WhatsApp key handling.

After a legitimate decryption produces HTML or text, open that export locally in Word or LibreOffice and save it as DOC. For non-sensitive, already decrypted exports, services such as CloudConvert or Zamzar can convert HTML or text to DOC if that input/output pair is offered. Never upload a CRYPT14 backup or its encryption key to an online conversion service.

Formatting and evidence limitations

A DOC file is a static transcript, not a WhatsApp backup. It cannot restore chats to WhatsApp or retain interactive message status, search indexes, encryption, or most reaction and attachment metadata.

Photos, videos, voice messages, stickers, and documents are normally separate export files. Insert only needed images into the Word document; embedding large media collections can create oversized DOC files and failures in older Word versions.

Long chats, emoji, unusual fonts, right-to-left scripts, and complex HTML can change appearance when saved as DOC. Keep the original exported .txt or HTML file, retain media separately, and preserve the original CRYPT14 file if authenticity or later recovery matters.
