How to convert bak to vcard file
- Contacts and address books

A phone, mail client, or address-book application may require contacts in .vcf format for import, sharing, or migration. A .bak file cannot be converted reliably until the application that created the backup is identified.
What the BAK format is
In contact software, .bak usually means a backup copy, not a standardized file format. Desktop address books, mail clients, phone-management utilities, and synchronization programs can all create BAK files with different internal structures.
The extension may appear beside an address-book database, in a migration folder, or in a device-backup directory. Renaming a file from .bak to .vcf works only when the file already contains vCard data with the wrong extension; renaming does not convert a proprietary database or backup archive.
What the VCARD format is
vCard is a standardized contact-exchange format, normally stored with the .vcf extension. A record can contain a name, telephone numbers, email addresses, postal addresses, organization details, dates, notes, photographs, and other contact properties.
A file may contain one contact or multiple contacts, so vCard is supported by phones, desktop address books, mail clients, and contact-sync services. vCard 3.0 is often the safest export choice for compatibility; vCard 4.0 supports newer features but is not accepted by every older application.
How to convert the backup
- Make a working copy of the BAK file and keep the original unchanged.
- Identify the program or device that created it. Check the containing folder, neighboring filenames, file dates, backup settings, device documentation, or the source computer. The extension alone is not enough.
- Open the matching contact or device-management software and use its restore function, such as Backup → Restore, File → Open, or Settings → Import backup. Some programs require the backup to have a particular filename or to be placed in a specific folder.
- Inspect the restored address book and confirm that names, phone numbers, email addresses, and other required fields are present.
- Export the restored contacts with the program’s vCard option, for example File → Export → vCard, Contacts → Export → vCard, or Share → Export as .vcf. Select vCard 3.0 if the destination application’s version requirements are unknown.
- Test the resulting
.vcffile by importing it into a separate address book or opening a copy in a text editor. A valid text vCard normally containsBEGIN:VCARD, aVERSIONproperty, contact properties, andEND:VCARD.
The original contact or device software is the best desktop tool because it knows the backup’s private structure. If that software is unavailable, use a recovery utility that explicitly supports the named source application or contact its vendor. Generic BAK converters cannot determine which database format an unidentified backup contains.
Online services such as CloudConvert or Zamzar are useful only when the file is already in a documented format they support; they are not universal BAK-to-vCard converters. Uploading an address-book backup to any online service also exposes personal contact data, so local restoration and export are preferable.
Quality and compatibility limits
Export may omit application-specific data, including groups, categories, custom fields, linked identities, synchronization metadata, contact photos, or unsupported notes. After importing the vCard, check duplicate records, accented characters, phone-number formatting, dates, photographs, and line breaks.
Keep a multi-contact .vcf file intact. Splitting it without respecting folded lines, escaping, and quoted-printable or other encoded properties can corrupt records. Retain the original BAK and the restored address-book database until the imported contacts have been verified.
