Extract BlackBerry contacts from a BBB backup and export them as compatible VCF vCards.

How to convert bbb to vcard file
- Contacts and address books

Older BlackBerry backups are often the only copy of contacts needed on a newer phone, mail client, or address book. Converting the backup to vCards creates importable .vcf files instead of requiring the original BlackBerry software or handset.
What the BBB format is
In the contacts context, .bbb is a proprietary BlackBerry backup container created by BlackBerry Desktop Software and, for some devices, BlackBerry Link. It can contain the Address Book together with messages, calendars, tasks, memos, and device settings.
A BBB file is not a standalone contact list, so renaming it to .vcf does not convert it. BBB files are typically encountered while recovering contacts from an older BlackBerry, migrating an archived device backup, or opening a backup made by discontinued BlackBerry software. Backup versions can differ internally, and some files are password-protected or encrypted.
What the vCard format is
vCard is a contact-exchange format normally stored with the .vcf extension. One file can contain one contact or multiple contact records, including names, telephone numbers, email addresses, postal addresses, organizations, notes, photographs, and dates.
VCF files can be imported by Android and iOS address books, Outlook, Thunderbird, macOS Contacts, Google Contacts, and most contact-management applications. vCard 3.0 is generally the safest export choice for mixed or unknown destinations; vCard 4.0 supports newer features but is not accepted by every older importer.
How to convert the backup
Restore with BlackBerry Desktop Software
- Make a working copy of the original
.bbbfile. Keep the original unchanged. - Use the BlackBerry Desktop Software release compatible with the backup, obtained only from a trusted installation source. The software is discontinued and may require an older Windows environment or an isolated virtual machine.
- Connect a compatible BlackBerry if the software requires one, then choose Device → Restore and select the copied backup. Restore only the Address Book or Contacts database when selective restoration is available.
- Configure contact synchronization through Device → Device options → Synchronization. Select Address Book, choose Microsoft Outlook or another supported desktop contact application, and synchronize the restored records. Menu names and supported applications vary by Desktop Software release.
- Check the synchronized contacts for missing fields and duplicates. Outlook commonly permits individual contacts to be saved through People → open contact → File → Save As → vCard Files; its batch vCard options vary by Outlook version.
- For a complete address book, export the contacts from the desktop application as CSV if necessary, import the CSV into Thunderbird with the CardBook extension or another contact manager that supports vCard export, and export as vCard 3.0.
Extract contacts without restoring a handset
A dedicated BlackBerry backup extractor can read compatible BBB files and expose their contact records. Reincubate BlackBerry Backup Extractor is one desktop option; confirm that it supports the specific BlackBerry backup generation and can read the contacts before paying for or processing the only copy.
If the extractor offers direct VCF export, choose it and select vCard 3.0 when available. If it exports only CSV, open the CSV in a local contact application, map the name, telephone, email, address, organization, and notes columns, remove duplicates, and export the resulting address book as .vcf. An extractor may recover contact fields while omitting photographs, categories, custom fields, or synchronization metadata.
Use a web contact service only after extraction
There is no generally reliable online converter that accepts proprietary BBB containers. After extracting contacts to CSV, Google Contacts can import the CSV and export selected contacts or the entire address book as vCard from its web interface. This transfers names, addresses, telephone numbers, and other personal data to a third party, so a local CardBook or similar desktop workflow is preferable for confidential backups.
Quality and compatibility limits
This process is an extraction followed by a re-export, not a direct format rewrite. BlackBerry-specific categories, custom fields, synchronization metadata, unsupported character encodings, and some profile photographs may be lost because they have no equivalent in the selected vCard version or destination application.
Before importing the full file, test several records containing accented characters, multiple telephone numbers, postal addresses, notes, and photographs. Confirm that text is interpreted as UTF-8, inspect duplicate handling, and retain the original BBB file as a recovery source. If neither compatible BlackBerry software nor a supported extractor can open the backup, a generic file converter cannot reliably reconstruct its contacts.
