Free online XPS to PNG converter

Many websites, image editors, messaging apps, and mobile devices do not accept XPS files but can display PNG images. Converting the pages produces shareable previews or raster images for editing, embedding, and archiving.

What the XPS format is

XPS, or XML Paper Specification, is a fixed-layout page-description format developed by Microsoft. It preserves page dimensions, text positioning, fonts, vector shapes, and images for consistent screen display and printing. Standard files use the .xps extension; the related OpenXPS format generally uses .oxps.

Windows applications can create XPS files through the Print → Microsoft XPS Document Writer printer. Windows Presentation Foundation applications can also generate them. XPS appears in older Windows workflows, document-management systems, print queues, and some scanning software. Support is limited on macOS, Linux, mobile devices, and browser-based applications.

What the PNG format is

PNG is a lossless raster format that stores an image as pixels. It supports grayscale, indexed color, full-color RGB, and transparency. PNG is suitable for document pages, screenshots, diagrams, forms, and line art because lossless compression avoids the block artifacts associated with JPEG.

PNG does not retain XPS document structure. Text is normally no longer selectable or searchable, fonts are no longer embedded as document resources, and a multi-page XPS file becomes one PNG per page. PNG files can also be substantially larger than a compressed PDF or JPEG.

How to convert XPS to PNG

Using 101convert

You can convert an XPS file for free on 101convert.com without installing software:

1. Open the XPS to PNG converter on 101convert.com.
2. Select the .xps file.
3. Choose PNG and start the conversion.
4. Download the generated image or images. A multi-page document normally produces one PNG for each page.

Using MuPDF from the command line

MuPDF's mutool draw command can render XPS pages directly. After installing MuPDF, open a terminal in the folder containing the file and run:

mutool draw -r 150 -o page-%d.png input.xps

The -r option sets the rendering resolution in DPI, while page-%d.png creates numbered files such as page-1.png and page-2.png. Use 300 DPI for print-oriented output:

mutool draw -r 300 -o page-%d.png input.xps

To render only pages 1 through 3, add a page range:

mutool draw -r 200 -o page-%d.png input.xps 1-3

Using Windows with an intermediate PDF

If direct XPS rendering is unavailable, open the file in XPS Viewer and select Print → Microsoft Print to PDF. Convert the resulting PDF with Poppler's pdftoppm:

pdftoppm -png -r 150 document.pdf page

This creates files such as page-1.png and page-2.png. The intermediate PDF adds a step and can alter fonts, transparency, color handling, or page dimensions, so compare the PDF and PNG output when exact appearance matters.

Quality and compatibility limits

Resolution determines pixel dimensions. A US Letter page is approximately 816 × 1056 pixels at 96 DPI, 1275 × 1650 at 150 DPI, and 2550 × 3300 at 300 DPI. Use 150–200 DPI for screen viewing and 300 DPI or higher when small text must remain legible in print. Higher values increase processing time, memory use, and file size.

PNG compression is lossless, but it cannot restore detail missing from a low-resolution image embedded in the XPS file. Custom paper sizes, rotated pages, clipping paths, transparency, unsupported fonts, and unusual color profiles may render differently between conversion tools. Check page orientation, dimensions, and several representative pages after conversion.

Links, metadata, annotations, accessibility structure, searchable text, and editable vector or text objects are not retained in the PNG. Keep the original XPS or use PDF when selectable text, search, document structure, or smaller multi-page storage is required; OCR can add searchable text to the resulting images but does not recreate the original layout objects.
