What the ITT format is

ITT usually means iTunes Timed Text, an Apple caption format based on timed-text XML and related to TTML. It stores subtitle text, start and end times, styling, positioning, language information, and sometimes speaker or accessibility metadata.

ITT files are encountered in Apple video-delivery workflows, caption-authoring applications, and subtitle packages prepared for Apple TV or iTunes-related distribution. They are XML files, but changing the extension to .srt does not convert the internal structure.

What the SRT format is

SRT, or SubRip Subtitle, is a plain-text format consisting of numbered entries, start and end timestamps, and caption text:

SRT is supported by most media players, video editors, subtitle tools, and upload systems. It is simpler than ITT, easy to edit manually, and broadly compatible, but it cannot preserve all ITT metadata, layout instructions, fonts, colors, or advanced timed-text behavior.

How to convert ITT to SRT

Using Subtitle Edit

1. Install and open the desktop application Subtitle Edit.
2. Choose File → Open and select the .itt file. If it is not visible, change the file filter to show all supported files or all files.
3. Check the subtitle list for correct text, ordering, and start and end times.
4. Choose File → Save as, select SubRip (*.srt) as the format, and save the result with an .srt extension.
5. Open the saved SRT in a media player with the video to verify synchronization and line breaks.

Subtitle Edit versions differ in their ITT/TTML import support. If the file does not open directly, use the application’s subtitle-format import option for TTML or Apple Timed Text, then save the loaded subtitle as .srt.

Quality and compatibility limitations

ITT timestamps may use XML time expressions or frame-based timing; a converter must interpret those values using the file’s timing information. Check the first, middle, and final captions after conversion, especially when the source was authored against a specific video frame rate.

SRT uses comma-separated millisecond timestamps in the form HH:MM:SS,mmm. If an output file contains periods instead of commas, unusual timestamp syntax, missing sequence numbers, or overlapping entries, reopen and resave it with a subtitle editor before importing it elsewhere.
