Free online SSA to SRT converter

A video editor, player, or subtitle-upload system may require SRT when it cannot open an SSA file. Converting preserves the dialogue and timing in a more widely supported text format, but removes most advanced styling.

What the SSA format is

SSA, or SubStation Alpha, is a text-based subtitle format designed for styled captions and timed effects. An SSA script can contain dialogue events, script metadata, font styles, colors, outlines, shadows, screen positions, margins, layer order, karaoke effects, and drawing commands.

Subtitle authors use SSA for anime and fan subtitles, karaoke scripts, and video projects that require positioned or heavily styled captions. Applications such as Aegisub and the original SubStation Alpha software can create or edit it. ASS, or Advanced SubStation Alpha, is a related and newer format with the same general conversion limitations.

What the SRT format is

SRT, or SubRip Subtitle, is a plain-text format supported by many media players, video editors, televisions, mobile applications, and subtitle-upload systems. Each cue normally contains a sequential number, a start and end time in hours:minutes:seconds,milliseconds format, and one or more lines of dialogue.

SRT is suitable when broad compatibility, simple editing, and small readable files matter more than styling. It can be opened in a text editor, but changing its structure manually can make cues unreadable to subtitle software.

How to convert the file

Using Subtitle Edit:

1. Open Subtitle Edit and choose File → Open.
2. Select the .ssa file. Check the dialogue, timing, character encoding, and line breaks in the subtitle grid.
3. Choose File → Save as and select SubRip (*.srt) as the output format.
4. Save with an .srt extension. Select UTF-8 if the save dialog provides an encoding option, particularly for accented, Cyrillic, Asian, or other non-ASCII text.
5. Open the resulting SRT in Subtitle Edit or a media player and check it against the video.

Subtitle Edit converts SSA event times and dialogue into SRT cues. It cannot represent SSA styles and effects in the SRT format, so those features are discarded or simplified.

Quality and compatibility limits

Visual styling is not preserved. Fonts, colors, outlines, shadows, exact positions, layer order, animations, karaoke timing, drawing commands, and many SSA override tags have no equivalent in ordinary SRT. Depending on the converter, tags may be removed, simplified, or left as visible text; inspect cues that contain formatting or positioning commands.

SSA commonly stores timestamps to centiseconds, using a form such as 0:01:23.45, while SRT uses milliseconds and a comma separator, such as 00:01:23,450. Conversion rounds or recalculates the values, so individual cues can differ by a few milliseconds.

Check the first, middle, and last cues against the video. An existing script delay, incorrect frame-rate assumption, or timing offset remains wrong after format conversion. Also check line breaks, cue overlaps, missing characters, and whether the target player accepts the selected encoding; SRT has no single universally enforced encoding standard, although UTF-8 is the safest modern choice.
