What the ITT format is

ITT usually means iTunes Timed Text, an XML-based subtitle format associated with Apple video delivery and captioning workflows. An ITT file stores cue text, start and end times, styling, positioning, language data, and sometimes speaker or accessibility metadata.

You may encounter ITT files exported for iTunes Store or Apple TV content, received from a captioning vendor, or extracted from an Apple-oriented post-production workflow. ITT resembles TTML because both formats use XML elements and timed regions, but ITT includes Apple-specific conventions that ordinary subtitle editors may not fully preserve.

What the VTT format is

VTT, or WebVTT, is a plain-text subtitle and timed-text format designed for web video. HTML5 video players use files beginning with WEBVTT; a typical cue contains a start time, an end time, and one or more lines of text.

VTT is supported by browsers, JavaScript video players, learning platforms, video hosting systems, and many desktop media applications. It is a good target when captions must work with an HTML <track> element or when a platform accepts VTT but rejects XML-based subtitle files.

How to convert ITT to VTT

Using the online converter

2. Upload the .itt file.
3. Select VTT as the output format and start the conversion.
4. Download the resulting .vtt file.
5. Open the VTT in a text editor and confirm that its first line is WEBVTT, then test it with the intended video player.

Using desktop subtitle software

A subtitle editor that supports both TTML or ITT input and WebVTT output can perform the same conversion locally. In Subtitle Edit, try File → Open and select the ITT file; if the installed version recognizes it, choose File → Save as and select WebVTT. If ITT is not listed or the imported cues are empty, use the online converter instead of renaming the extension, because changing .itt to .vtt does not convert the internal XML structure.

Quality and compatibility limitations

Timing normally transfers accurately, but ITT features that have no direct VTT equivalent can be simplified or discarded. Possible changes include font declarations, exact region placement, background styling, ruby annotations, speaker metadata, and Apple-specific accessibility tags.

Check cue timing around overlaps and gaps after conversion. VTT requires valid timestamps such as 00:01:12.500 --> 00:01:15.200; cue times use a period for milliseconds, not the comma used by SubRip files. Also verify UTF-8 characters, line breaks, right-to-left text, and caption positioning in the final player.

For browser playback, reference the file with a track element such as <track kind="captions" src="captions.vtt" srclang="en" label="English">. Keep the original ITT file because conversion may remove styling or metadata that cannot be represented in WebVTT.
