What the ITT format is

ITT usually means iTunes Timed Text, an XML-based subtitle format used in Apple TV, iTunes Store, and related video-delivery workflows. It stores subtitle text alongside start and end times, language information, line breaks, and, depending on the file, styling or speaker metadata.

ITT files are often delivered with professionally captioned or localized video rather than created manually by consumer subtitle editors. The .itt extension is not a universal standard, so inspect the file if it does not open as subtitle XML; unrelated applications can use the same extension.

What the SSA format is

SSA, or SubStation Alpha, is a text-based subtitle format with sections such as [Script Info], [V4 Styles], and [Events]. Each dialogue event includes a start time, end time, style, and subtitle text.

SSA is useful when you need editable subtitle styling, fixed screen positioning, margins, font settings, or compatibility with subtitle authoring and playback software. Using Subtitle Edit

1. Make a backup of source.itt.
2. Install and open Subtitle Edit, then choose File → Open and select the ITT file. If it is hidden by the file filter, select an all-files option.
3. Check several subtitle events for correct start times, end times, line breaks, and accented characters. ITT timestamps may use fractional seconds, while SSA displays times in centiseconds.
4. Choose File → Save as, select SubStation Alpha (*.ssa) as the output type, and save the result as converted.ssa.
5. Reopen the saved SSA file and preview it against the video. Confirm that the first and last events, overlapping captions, and any positioned subtitles remain correct.
