Free online MKS to SSA converter

An MKS file is a Matroska container containing one or more subtitle tracks. It commonly appears after extracting subtitles from an MKV video without retaining the video and audio streams. The subtitle payload may be text-based, such as SRT, SSA/ASS, or WebVTT, or image-based, such as PGS or VobSub. The .mks extension identifies the container, not necessarily the internal subtitle format. MKS files are created by Matroska tools such as MKVToolNix and are encountered in subtitle archives, Blu-ray subtitle workflows, and extracted media tracks. Inspect the internal codec before converting because a text subtitle can be converted to SSA, while bitmap subtitles require OCR.

What the SSA format is

SSA, or SubStation Alpha, is a text-based subtitle format with dialogue lines, timestamps, styles, fonts, colors, positioning, and optional karaoke timing. Its usual extension is .ssa; the newer ASS format extends SSA with additional styling features. SSA is useful when a subtitle editor or older media player expects SubStation Alpha syntax, or when you need to adjust fonts, margins, screen position, layer order, and timed dialogue. It preserves substantially more styling than plain SRT, but conversion cannot recreate formatting that was never present in the MKS track.

How to actually convert MKS to SSA

Online method: Use the converter on 101convert.com. Upload the .mks file, choose SSA as the output format, start the conversion, and download the resulting .ssa file. This requires no installed software; avoid this method for confidential subtitles because the file must be uploaded for processing.

Desktop method with MKVToolNix and Subtitle Edit:

1. Open the MKS file in MKVToolNix GUI and inspect the listed subtitle track and codec.
2. Choose Multiplexer → Input or use the track-extraction function to identify the subtitle track ID.
3. Extract the track with MKVToolNix, for example: mkvextract tracks subtitles.mks 0:subtitle.ass. Replace 0 with the actual track ID.
4. Open the extracted file in Subtitle Edit.
5. Choose File → Save as, select SubStation Alpha (*.ssa), and save the output.

If the extracted track is SRT or another text format, open that file directly in Subtitle Edit and select SSA in the save dialog. If the source is already SSA/ASS, extraction may be sufficient; resave it as .ssa only when the receiving application requires the SSA extension or syntax.

For command-line workflows, list tracks first with mkvmerge -i subtitles.mks, then extract the required track with mkvextract tracks subtitles.mks TRACK_ID:subtitle.ass. Use a subtitle editor to convert SRT or ASS syntax to the exact SSA format when simple renaming is not enough.

Quality and compatibility limits

A text-based MKS track retains dialogue timing, but style preservation depends on its original codec. SSA/ASS input can retain styles; SRT input has no original font, color, or positioning data, so the converter must create default SSA styles. Some players accept ASS but reject older SSA features or incorrectly render advanced positioning.

PGS and VobSub tracks contain images rather than characters. They cannot be directly converted into editable SSA; use OCR in a subtitle tool, proofread the recognized text, correct timestamps, and then export to SSA. Multiple subtitle tracks also require selecting the correct language and track ID before extraction.
