What the MKS format is
.mks is usually a Matroska container used for subtitle tracks, although Matroska can hold other elementary streams. Files with this extension are commonly created or extracted with MKVToolNix, including mkvmerge and mkvextract. You may encounter MKS files alongside MKV video files when subtitles have been separated from the original container.
An MKS file can contain text subtitles such as SRT, ASS, or WebVTT data, or bitmap subtitles such as PGS and VobSub. The internal subtitle type determines whether conversion to LRC is straightforward.
What the LRC format is
LRC is a plain-text lyrics format in which each lyric line has a timestamp, for example [00:12.50]First lyric line. Music players, karaoke software, and some portable devices use these timestamps to display lyrics during playback.
LRC is suitable for line-level synchronization and is smaller than container-based subtitle formats. It does not preserve subtitle styling, positioning, speaker formatting, images, or most advanced ASS subtitle effects.
How to convert MKS to LRC
Using the converter on 101convert.com
- Open the MKS-to-LRC converter on 101convert.com.
- Upload the
.mksfile and selectLRCas the output format. - Start the conversion, then download the generated
.lrcfile. - Give the LRC file the same base name as the audio file, such as
song.mp3andsong.lrc, and place both files in the same folder if the player matches files by name.
This option requires no software installation. It is appropriate for MKS files containing readable timed text; bitmap subtitle tracks may not produce usable lyrics without OCR.
Using MKVToolNix and Subtitle Edit
- Install MKVToolNix and inspect the tracks with
mkvmerge -i input.mks. Record the subtitle track ID and codec. - Extract the subtitle track, using an extension that matches its codec. For example:
mkvextract tracks input.mks 0:subtitles.ass. - Open the extracted file in Subtitle Edit.
- Choose File → Save as, select
LRCas the format, and save the result assong.lrc. - Check the timing in Subtitle Edit against the audio, then correct line breaks or timestamps before copying the file to the playback device.
If the extracted track is text but the application does not accept the original extension, use a compatible subtitle export from MKVToolNix or convert it to SRT first, then open the SRT in Subtitle Edit and save it as LRC.
Quality and compatibility limitations
MKS may contain several subtitle tracks, including translations and hearing-impaired variants. Select the intended language track rather than converting the container without checking its contents.
PGS and VobSub tracks are images, not characters. They must be OCR-processed with a subtitle editor, and OCR errors, missing punctuation, and incorrect line segmentation should be corrected manually. A bitmap track cannot be converted to accurate LRC by simple text-format conversion.
LRC normally stores one timestamp per lyric line. If the source has word-level karaoke timing, ordinary LRC may lose that detail; some players support extended tags such as word timestamps, but compatibility varies. LRC also may not preserve subtitle delays, positioning, styling, or multiple simultaneous speakers.
