Free online SRT to SSA converter

Some older media players, subtitle editors, and authoring tools require SubStation Alpha for styled captions and do not import SRT directly. Converting changes the file structure so the dialogue and timing can be used with SSA styles, positioning, and rendering controls.

What the SRT format is

SRT, or SubRip Subtitle, is a plain-text format made of numbered subtitle blocks. Each block contains a start and end time in hours:minutes:seconds,milliseconds format, one or more lines of caption text, and usually a blank line before the next block.

SRT is used by captioning applications, video editors, media players, DVD-ripping tools, automatic speech-recognition services, and people distributing subtitles alongside video files such as .mp4 and .mkv. Its simple structure makes it widely supported, but it has no formal stylesheet. Tags such as <i> and <b> may be recognized, while fonts, colors, exact placement, outlines, and animation are not reliably portable.

What the SSA format is

SSA, or SubStation Alpha, is a text-based subtitle scripting format originally created for styled subtitles. A typical file contains sections such as [Script Info], [V4 Styles], and [Events]. Dialogue events reference named styles and store timing, text, margins, alignment, and other display fields.

SSA styles can define fonts, size, bold and italic properties, colors, outlines, shadows, margins, and screen alignment. Event-level positioning and effect fields support authored layouts and some karaoke workflows. SSA is older than ASS, or Advanced SubStation Alpha; many current programs support both, but ASS is generally implemented more completely. Use SSA when the target program specifically requires it.

How to convert SRT to SSA

Subtitle Edit provides a practical desktop workflow:

1. Open Subtitle Edit and choose File → Open, then select the .srt file.
2. Check the imported text, cue order, line breaks, and start and end times.
3. Choose File → Save as.
4. Select SubStation Alpha (*.ssa) as the output type, enter a filename such as captions.ssa, and save.
5. Set the required font, size, colors, margins, and alignment in the style controls when available. If no style is configured, the program writes a default SSA style.

If accented or non-Latin characters appear incorrectly, load the source with its known encoding in a Python script and save using an encoding supported by the target application.

Quality and compatibility limits

Conversion cannot restore styling that was not stored in the SRT. The output normally receives a default SSA style, and source tags may be converted, ignored, or displayed literally depending on the converter and renderer.

SRT normally stores milliseconds, while SSA event times use centiseconds in a form such as 0:01:23.45. Rounding to hundredths of a second can change a cue by several milliseconds, which is usually insignificant but can matter in frame-accurate work.

SSA renderers can differ in font availability, Unicode handling, line breaks, positioning, drawing commands, and color interpretation. Test the saved file in the exact player or authoring program that will use it. If that program supports ASS but has incomplete SSA support, export as .ass only when its documentation confirms that ASS is accepted.
