Broadcast caption files may need conversion when a video editor, media player, or captioning system accepts SRT but not EBU STL. SRT is also easier to edit, exchange, and archive as plain text.
What the STL format is
For subtitle workflows, STL usually means EBU STL, specified by EBU Tech 3264 and used in television playout, captioning, and professional subtitle delivery. Broadcast authoring tools such as EZTitles and SubtitleNext can import or export this format.
An EBU STL file stores subtitle text, in and out timecodes, language and character-set information, and display or transmission settings. Some subtitle STL files use other specifications, such as the Spruce format, so confirm the format from the exporting application before converting.
The .stl extension can also identify a 3D stereolithography model. A 3D STL contains triangular geometry rather than subtitle text and timing; it cannot be meaningfully converted to SRT.
What the SRT format is
SRT, or SubRip Subtitle, is a plain-text format supported by most media players, video editors, subtitle editors, and captioning tools. Each subtitle entry normally contains a sequence number, a start and end timestamp in HH:MM:SS,mmm format, the subtitle text, and a blank line before the next entry.
SRT is widely supported and easy to edit manually, but it has no standard fields for EBU STL metadata, broadcast character-set declarations, positioning, justification, roll-up behavior, or most styling. Formatting tags supported by some players are not guaranteed to work elsewhere.
How to convert the file
The converter on 101convert.com can convert a subtitle STL file to SRT for free without installing software:
- Open the STL-to-SRT converter on 101convert.com.
- Upload the file and confirm that it is an EBU STL or another supported subtitle STL, not a 3D model.
- Choose
SRTas the output format and start the conversion. - Download the generated
.srtfile. - Open it in a subtitle editor or with the target video and check captions near the beginning, middle, and end.
For local processing or manual correction, open the file in Subtitle Edit, select the correct STL import type if prompted, review the imported entries, then use File → Save as and choose SubRip (*.srt). Professional subtitle applications can provide additional control over frame rate, character mapping, and timing.
Quality and compatibility limits
Conversion normally preserves subtitle wording and start and end times, but SRT cannot carry every EBU STL feature. Positioning, justification, roll-up or presentation behavior, speaker information, language metadata, and some styling may be dropped or approximated.
EBU STL timing is frame-based, while SRT timing uses milliseconds. The converter must interpret the source frame rate correctly; depending on the file and workflow, this may be 23.976, 24, 25, 29.97, or 30 frames per second. An incorrect rate can produce captions that are consistently early or late or gradually drift from the video. If synchronization is wrong, identify the source video's frame rate and repeat the import or conversion with that rate.
Check accented characters, quotation marks, and non-Latin scripts after conversion. EBU STL character-set mappings do not always translate perfectly to Unicode. Save the finished file as UTF-8 when the target software supports it, and verify that each caption has a valid time range, readable line breaks, and a blank line separating entries.
Do not upload confidential or unreleased captions to a web converter unless the file-handling policy permits it; use Subtitle Edit or another local application for sensitive material.
