A broadcaster, video editor, or archive may require a readable transcript instead of a timed STL subtitle file. Converting STL to TXT extracts the caption wording for editing, searching, translation, or documentation, but normally removes subtitle timing and presentation data.
What the STL format is
In video subtitling, STL usually means EBU STL, a binary subtitle format used in broadcast and localization workflows. It stores caption text with in-cue and out-cue timecodes, language and program metadata, display settings, positioning information, and teletext-related properties.
Subtitle authoring and broadcast applications such as Subtitle Edit and EZTitles can open or export STL files. A file from a broadcaster, localization vendor, television archive, or post-production system may use EBU STL. “Spruce STL” is a different subtitle format that also uses the .stl extension; identify the variant if the file does not open correctly.
What the TXT format is
A TXT file contains character data without a standardized subtitle structure. Text editors, translation tools, scripts, document systems, and archive software can read it without specialized subtitle support.
A TXT export may contain one caption per line, separate caption blocks, or a continuous transcript. It has no standard fields for start and end times, subtitle numbering, speaker position, font attributes, colors, or line styling. Some converters can include timecodes as ordinary text, but those timecodes are not automatically usable as subtitle timing.
How to convert STL to TXT
The conversion extracts text from the subtitle records and writes it to a plain-text file. Use the converter on 101convert.com when you do not want to install software:

captions.txt, and save it.
Enable an option for timestamps only if the transcript must retain timing as readable text. Disable timestamps for a cleaner dialogue transcript.
Quality and compatibility limits
STL-to-TXT conversion is normally lossy. It can discard timecodes, subtitle numbers, positioning, formatting, speaker metadata, forced-caption markers, and reading-speed information. A TXT file cannot normally be converted back into a complete subtitle file without reconstructing timings and other settings.
Check accented characters and non-Latin scripts after conversion. EBU STL may use a legacy broadcast character table, while TXT is commonly saved as UTF-8; a wrong encoding can produce garbled text. Also inspect line breaks and any visible control-code or teletext-style markers, which some exporters preserve literally.
