Free online VTT to TXT converter

Video editors, transcription systems, search tools, and note-taking applications may require subtitle dialogue without timestamps or cue metadata. Converting VTT to TXT creates a smaller plain-text transcript that is easier to edit, share, index, or archive.

What the VTT format is

WebVTT, stored with the .vtt extension, is a UTF-8 timed-text format used by HTML5 video players and subtitle workflows. A file normally starts with WEBVTT and contains cues with start and end times, such as 00:01:12.500 --> 00:01:15.800, followed by one or more caption lines.

VTT files may also contain cue identifiers, positioning settings, speaker labels, inline formatting tags, comments, regions, and header metadata. Browsers, video-hosting systems, screen-recording software, video editors, and caption-authoring applications commonly create or use them.

What the TXT format is

TXT is a plain-text format with no required structure for timestamps, styling, speaker metadata, or caption positioning. In subtitle workflows, a TXT file usually contains dialogue, speaker names, and accessibility descriptions such as [MUSIC] as ordinary text lines.

TXT files open in basic text editors, office software, code editors, and transcription systems without subtitle-specific support. They are easy to search, process, share, and archive, but a video player cannot use a TXT file to synchronize captions because it contains no timing information.

How to convert VTT to TXT

Using 101convert.com:

4. Download the resulting .txt file and inspect it in a plain-text editor.

The conversion is free and does not require software installation. Check line breaks, speaker labels, special characters, and repeated captions after downloading.

Manual conversion for a small file: Open the VTT file in a text editor, remove the WEBVTT header, cue identifiers, timestamp lines, metadata blocks, and separator lines, then save the remaining text with a .txt extension. Remove inline tags such as <i> and <c> if the destination needs unformatted dialogue. Saving with a .txt extension is not enough if the file still contains timestamps or VTT markup.

Desktop conversion: Subtitle Edit can open VTT files and export their text through File → Export → Plain text; menu names can vary by version. For repeated or automated conversions, use a VTT-aware parser rather than deleting every line containing digits. The parser should skip NOTE, STYLE, and REGION blocks, remove cue timing and WebVTT markup, decode entities such as &, and write the result as UTF-8.

Quality and compatibility limits

Conversion removes synchronization by design, so the TXT output cannot be loaded as timed subtitles. Cue placement, colors, karaoke timing, regions, styling, and other presentation information are also lost.

Keep speaker labels and sound descriptions when accessibility, transcription accuracy, or legal completeness matters. Consecutive repeated captions may be intentional rolling updates rather than duplicate dialogue; remove them only when a clean transcript is required. Review files with overlapping cues, multiline captions, intentional repeated words, accented characters, or non-Latin scripts because plain text has no standard way to represent their original timing and layout.

Use UTF-8 when saving the TXT file to preserve international characters. If another application requires synchronized subtitles, retain the original VTT file or convert it to a timed subtitle format instead of TXT.
