Free online ASS to SRT converter

A video player, editor, television, or subtitle-upload system may accept SRT but reject ASS. Converting the file keeps its dialogue and timing in a smaller, more widely supported format for sharing, editing, or playback.

What the ASS format is

ASS (Advanced SubStation Alpha) is a plain-text subtitle script designed for detailed styling and precise positioning. It can contain multiple named styles, fonts, colors, outlines, shadows, margins, screen coordinates, layer order, speaker labels, karaoke effects, and vector drawings.

Anime fansub groups, typesetters, and subtitle editors commonly use ASS. Aegisub and Subtitle Edit can create and edit it, while players such as VLC and mpv can render many of its styling instructions. Typical sections include [Script Info], [V4+ Styles] or [V4++ Styles], and [Events].

What the SRT format is

SRT (SubRip Subtitle) is a simple text format containing numbered entries, start and end timecodes, dialogue, and a blank line between entries. A standard timecode looks like 00:01:12,500 --> 00:01:15,200.

SRT is accepted by most video players, editors, televisions, subtitle-upload systems, and media servers. It is smaller and easier to inspect than ASS, but it cannot represent ASS styles, exact positioning, layer order, vector drawings, or animated effects.

How to convert ASS to SRT

Subtitle Edit provides a practical desktop method:

1. Open Subtitle Edit and choose File → Open, then select the .ass file.
2. Check the dialogue, timings, line breaks, and character encoding in the subtitle grid. Correct any errors before exporting.
3. Choose File → Save as.
4. Select SubRip (*.srt) as the output format and save the file with an .srt extension.

Subtitle Edit converts the ASS event timings to SRT timestamps and writes the dialogue as SRT entries. It removes ASS features that SRT cannot store. For batch processing or command-line work, FFmpeg can convert a standalone ASS subtitle file:

ffmpeg -i input.ass output.srt

For a video containing an embedded text-based ASS track, inspect the input first with ffmpeg -i video.mkv, identify the subtitle stream, and map it explicitly:

ffmpeg -i video.mkv -map 0:s:0 output.srt

Replace 0:s:0 with the required stream index. This method is suitable for text subtitles such as ASS; image-based subtitle streams require a different conversion process and cannot be converted to editable dialogue automatically.

Quality and compatibility limitations

Conversion is lossy. Font declarations, colors, outlines, shadows, margins, screen coordinates, karaoke timing, vector drawings, and overlapping layer behavior are discarded. Basic bold, italic, or underline formatting may be mapped to SRT-compatible tags, but support varies by converter and playback software.

Review entries containing \N line breaks, positioning overrides, embedded fonts, animation tags, or karaoke tags. Check the resulting file in the target player because line wrapping, overlapping events, unsupported markup, and character encoding can change its appearance.

SRT normally uses three-digit milliseconds and a comma as the decimal separator, for example 00:00:05,250. Some programs accept periods or fewer decimal digits, but comma-based three-digit timestamps provide the broadest compatibility. Save text as UTF-8 when the subtitles contain accented characters, non-Latin scripts, or symbols.
