Convert FDB to PDF

A business application may require a printable PDF of records stored in a Firebird database for emailing, filing, or customer delivery. Because an .fdb file contains structured data rather than pages, the conversion must generate a report or printable result set.

What the FDB format is

.fdb most commonly identifies a Firebird database used by business applications, including accounting, inventory, point-of-sale, and custom software. Firebird stores tables, relationships, indexes, views, stored procedures, and application data; the database file has no inherent page layout for direct PDF export.

The extension is not exclusive to Firebird, so identify the program that created the file before selecting a conversion method. The original application may contain report definitions, invoice layouts, filters, and permissions that a generic database tool cannot reproduce.

What the PDF format is

PDF can preserve page size, positioning, fonts, tables, and images for consistent viewing and printing across operating systems. It is suitable for fixed-layout reports, email attachments, and archival snapshots of selected database results.

PDF does not preserve the FDB database structure. It normally cannot retain tables, relationships, indexes, queries, or editable records. Use CSV, XLSX, or another database export when recipients need to analyze or modify the data.

How to convert the database to PDF

Use the original application

1. Make a backup or work from a copy of the database, then open it through the application that created it.
2. Open the required customer, transaction, inventory, invoice, or other report.
3. Apply date, record, grouping, and status filters before generating the output.
4. Choose File → Print, Report → Export → PDF, or the equivalent command.
5. Check paper size, orientation, margins, repeated headings, page breaks, images, and the record count before saving the PDF.

This method usually gives the best result because the application understands calculated fields, stored-procedure reports, BLOB images, and business-specific formatting.

Generate a report with DBeaver

DBeaver Community can connect to Firebird when the original application is unavailable and the database credentials and schema are known.

1. Create a Firebird connection and provide the database path or server address, port, username, and password. A standard Firebird installation commonly uses port 3050.
2. Install or select the Firebird JDBC driver when DBeaver requests it. Use a driver and server combination compatible with the database version.
3. Open a SQL editor and query only the required columns and rows, for example SELECT id, customer_name, total, invoice_date FROM invoices ORDER BY invoice_date;.
4. Right-click the result grid, choose Export data, and select HTML or another supported output format.
5. Open the HTML file in a browser and choose Print → Save to PDF. Alternatively, export CSV or XLSX, format it in LibreOffice Calc or Microsoft Excel, and choose File → Export as PDF.

DBeaver menu names vary by version. Save the SQL query if the report must be regenerated, and format the exported HTML or spreadsheet before printing.

Use Firebird's isql utility

Firebird's isql command-line client can extract a plain-text result that can then be printed to PDF:

isql -user SYSDBA -password your_password localhost:/path/database.fdb -input report.sql -output report.txt

A basic report.sql file can contain:

Open report.txt in a word processor or browser and use Print → Save to PDF. This produces plain text, not a designed invoice or table report; use the source application, DBeaver, or a spreadsheet when layout matters.

Use an online service only for exported data

There is no generally reliable direct online converter for Firebird .fdb databases. For non-confidential data, first export the required records locally to HTML, CSV, or XLSX, then use a reputable service that currently supports that intermediary format, such as CloudConvert, or create the PDF locally in a browser or LibreOffice. Do not upload a database containing personal, financial, or proprietary information unless the service's security and retention terms are acceptable.

Quality and compatibility limitations

• Connect with an account permitted to read the required tables and views; application-level permissions may not be available in a generic database client.
• Encrypted databases, custom authentication, computed fields, BLOB images, and stored-procedure reports may require the original application.
• Do not edit, rename, or move a live database while extracting data. Use a verified backup or a controlled read-only connection where possible.
• Firebird server versions, client libraries, and JDBC drivers must be compatible. Test access on a copy, because opening an old database with an unsuitable server can cause errors or require database-version changes.
• Large result sets can create unwieldy PDFs. Filter by date or key, split the output, enable repeated table headings, and verify that columns are not clipped.
• PDF output may lose interactive database behavior, formulas, searchable text in image-based reports, or unsupported fonts. Check text selection, page count, totals, and images in the finished file.
