How to convert fdb to xlsx file

Microsoft Excel cannot open a Firebird database file directly, so an .fdb export is used for editable worksheets, spreadsheet analysis, reporting, or sharing data with users who do not have Firebird access. The export copies selected tables or query results; it does not convert the database engine, relationships, or server logic into an Excel workbook.
What the FDB format is
In the Databases category, .fdb normally identifies a Firebird relational database. A Firebird database file contains tables, views, indexes, stored procedures, triggers, generators, metadata, and transaction information. Firebird Server, Firebird Embedded, and applications using Firebird client libraries create and access these files.
FDB files commonly belong to accounting, inventory, point-of-sale, and other line-of-business applications. A database server normally opens the file through a configured path or alias; it should not be edited in a text editor or copied while active database processes are writing to it. FoxPro databases are a different format and are normally associated with .dbf, not this database meaning of .fdb.
What the XLSX format is
.xlsx is the Office Open XML workbook format supported by Microsoft Excel, LibreOffice Calc, and other spreadsheet applications. It stores worksheets, cell values, formulas, formatting, filters, charts, and multiple tabs in a compressed package.
XLSX supports sorting, filtering, calculations, review, and report distribution, but it is not a relational database replacement. A normal export does not preserve table relationships, constraints, indexes, triggers, stored procedures, permissions, transactions, or the ability to write changes back to Firebird.
Convert with DBeaver
DBeaver is a practical desktop option because it connects to Firebird through JDBC, runs SQL, and exports tables or query results to XLSX.
- Install a current DBeaver edition and create a connection through Database → New Database Connection → Firebird.
- Enter the Firebird server host, port—usually
3050—database path or alias, username, and password. For a local database, use the path visible to the Firebird server; a remote client cannot use a path that exists only on the client computer. - Test the connection and allow DBeaver to download its Firebird JDBC driver if prompted. The account must have permission to read the required tables or views.
- For a complete table, expand the connection, select the table, choose Export Data, select
XLSX, choose the output filename, configure columns and rows, and run the export. - For selected or joined data, open an SQL editor and run a controlled query such as
SELECT ID, CUSTOMER_NAME, CREATED_AT FROM CUSTOMER WHERE CREATED_AT >= DATE '2026-01-01'. Right-click the result grid, choose Export Data, selectXLSX, configure the worksheet and column options, and save the workbook.
Exporting a query is preferable when the workbook needs readable column aliases, a date range, selected fields, joined tables, or aggregated values. It also avoids exposing unrelated database records.
Convert through CSV
If the database client cannot create XLSX directly, export a table or query result to CSV with a Firebird client such as isql, then open the CSV in Excel or LibreOffice Calc and use File → Save As to create .xlsx. Set the delimiter, quotation character, encoding, date format, and decimal separator explicitly; use UTF-8 when available and inspect the imported dates, numbers, NULLs, and non-ASCII text before saving.
For repeatable exports, a script can connect through a Firebird driver, execute a fixed SQL query, and write the result with an XLSX library. The script must match the Firebird client library and SQL dialect to the database version and define handling for BLOBs, timestamps, NULLs, decimal precision, and identifiers that contain leading zeroes.
Online converter availability
General file converters such as CloudConvert or Zamzar are not dependable choices for Firebird FDB files: an FDB is a live database structure requiring a Firebird engine and credentials, not a self-contained document format such as CSV. Do not upload a production database containing personal, financial, or confidential records to an online service. A web service is suitable only if it explicitly supports Firebird databases, states how it extracts tables or queries, and is approved for the data; otherwise use a local Firebird connection and export tool.
Quality and compatibility limits
- Use
gbakor another Firebird-supported backup procedure to create a consistent backup. Do not treat a raw copy of an active FDB file as a safe backup, and perform the export from a restored copy when possible. - An Excel worksheet is limited to 1,048,576 rows and 16,384 columns. Split large exports into worksheets or files, or export an aggregate report instead.
- Firebird
NUMERICandDECIMALvalues can lose precision when represented as spreadsheet numbers. Export high-precision values as text when exact digits matter, and preserve account numbers or other identifiers with leading zeroes as text. - Review timestamps, time-zone assumptions, character encoding, NULL values, and BLOB fields. Binary BLOBs generally cannot become useful worksheet cells; text BLOBs may require an explicit cast or conversion in the SQL query.
- Compare exported row counts, totals, and representative records with the source query. XLSX is a static snapshot and cannot be used to restore the Firebird database or its application behavior.
