What the S3DB format is

.s3db commonly identifies an SQLite 3 database, although the extension is not a universal format standard. Desktop, mobile, embedded, and specialist applications use these files to store tables, indexes, settings, and other structured records; Android applications are a frequent source.

An S3DB file is a database rather than a spreadsheet. It can contain multiple related tables, views, indexes, triggers, and other SQLite objects, so conversion requires selecting which tables or query results should become workbook worksheets.

What the XLSX format is

.xlsx is the Office Open XML workbook format supported by Microsoft Excel, LibreOffice Calc, Apple Numbers, and many data-analysis tools. It supports multiple worksheets, filters, formulas, cell formatting, and charts, allowing recipients to sort, analyze, and edit exported records in spreadsheet software.

How to convert an S3DB file to XLSX

Using the 101convert converter

1. Make a copy of the original .s3db file. If the database is still open, close its source application first; an active SQLite database may also have matching -wal and -shm files.

Using desktop software

1. Install and open DB Browser for SQLite, then choose File → Open Database and select the S3DB file.
2. Use the Browse Data tab to inspect each required table. Export tables with File → Export → Table(s) as CSV file.
3. Open each CSV in Microsoft Excel or LibreOffice Calc. In the import dialog, verify the character encoding, delimiter, quoted-text setting, and column preview.
4. For Excel, choose File → Save As and select Excel Workbook (*.xlsx). In Calc, choose File → Save As, select Excel 2007–365 (*.xlsx), and confirm the format when prompted.
5. To place several tables in one workbook, open each exported CSV in a separate worksheet, rename the sheets clearly, and save the workbook as XLSX.

Export only the required columns or filtered records when possible. A SQL query can produce a cleaner export, but the exact method for exporting query results depends on the SQLite tool being used.

Quality and compatibility limitations

• The conversion transfers values into spreadsheet cells; it does not convert primary keys, foreign-key relationships, indexes, triggers, constraints, permissions, or SQL logic into equivalent XLSX features.
• CSV is an intermediate format in the desktop workflow, so it does not retain formulas, cell formatting, data types, or relationships. XLSX formatting and formulas must be added after import unless the converter creates them.
• SQLite dates and times may be stored as text or numeric values. Check date recognition, decimal separators, Boolean values, nulls, and time zones after conversion.
• Format identifiers such as postal codes, account numbers, and long numeric IDs as text during import; otherwise Excel may remove leading zeroes or display long values inaccurately.
• Excel worksheets are limited to 1,048,576 rows and 16,384 columns. Very large tables may exceed those limits or become slow, making the original database a better working format.
• Keep the original S3DB file because separate worksheets do not preserve relational structure and are not a substitute for a database backup.
