Understanding EASM and IPT file formats

EASM (eDrawings Assembly) files are highly compressed, read-only representations of 3D CAD assemblies, typically created using SolidWorks eDrawings. They are designed for easy sharing and viewing, but not for editing or direct conversion to editable CAD formats.

IPT files are Autodesk Inventor Part files, used for storing 3D part models with full parametric and feature data. These files are editable and widely used in professional engineering and manufacturing workflows.

Challenges in converting EASM to IPT

Direct conversion from EASM to IPT is not straightforward because EASM files are intended for viewing, not editing. They lack the parametric and feature data required by Inventor's IPT format. As a result, conversion typically involves extracting geometry and importing it as a neutral format, losing parametric history.

How to convert EASM to IPT

1. Open the EASM file in eDrawings Viewer.
2. Export the file to a neutral 3D format such as STEP (.stp/.step) or IGES (.igs/.iges) if the export option is available. Use File → Save As and select the desired format.
3. Launch Autodesk Inventor.
4. Import the exported STEP or IGES file using File → Open and select the neutral file.
5. Save the imported geometry as an IPT file using File → Save As and choose Inventor Part (*.ipt).

Note: The resulting IPT file will contain only the solid geometry, not the original parametric features.
