Free online DB to ODT converter

A DB file may need conversion when its records must be edited, formatted, or shared as a document in software that supports OpenDocument Text. Because .db can represent several unrelated database formats, the correct conversion method depends on the program that created it.

What the DB format is

.db is a generic filename extension, not one single database standard. SQLite, older mobile applications, database utilities, and proprietary programs commonly use it for tables, indexes, and other structured records. Some files with this extension are SQLite databases; others require the original application or a compatible database driver.

A database stores fields and records rather than a page-layout document. Converting it to ODT therefore usually means exporting a table, query, or report and placing that output into an OpenDocument text file.

What the ODT format is

ODT is the OpenDocument Text format used by LibreOffice Writer, Apache OpenOffice, and other office software. It is suitable for editable reports, tables, formatted paragraphs, headers, images, and page layouts.

ODT is preferable when recipients need to revise the result or when the data must be archived as a readable document. It does not preserve database behavior such as relationships, indexes, queries, forms, or automatic updates.

How to actually convert DB to ODT

Using the built-in online converter

1. Open the DB-to-ODT converter on 101convert.com.
2. Select the .db file and start the conversion.
3. Download the generated .odt file when processing finishes.
4. Open the result in LibreOffice Writer or another ODT-compatible editor and check the tables, character encoding, and page breaks.

Online conversion can work only when the service recognizes the particular database variant. Do not upload confidential records unless the file-handling policy meets your requirements.

Using the source database and LibreOffice

1. Open the DB file in its native application or a compatible database tool.
2. Run the required query, select the relevant table, or generate a report.
3. Export the result as .csv, .html, or another format supported by LibreOffice. CSV is appropriate for raw tabular data; HTML or a generated report usually preserves more presentation.
4. In LibreOffice Writer, choose File → Open and open the exported file. For CSV, select the delimiter, text encoding, and column types in the import dialog.
5. Adjust headings, column widths, page orientation, and table formatting.
6. Choose File → Save As, select ODF Text Document (.odt), and save the document.

For a SQLite database, inspect or export the data with SQLite-compatible software before opening the export in Writer. A command-line export can be created with sqlite3 database.db -header -csv "SELECT * FROM table_name;" > export.csv; replace database.db and table_name with the actual filename and table.

Quality and compatibility limits

A conversion cannot reliably reproduce database relationships, multiple linked tables, formulas, forms, permissions, indexes, or queries in ODT. Large tables may be split across pages or become difficult to edit, and date, currency, NULL, and Unicode values can change during CSV export.

Check the source encoding, delimiters, decimal separators, and date format before exporting. If the DB file is encrypted, damaged, proprietary, or not actually SQLite, use the creating application or its export function first; changing the filename extension will not convert the data.
