A printed route sheet, email attachment, or archive often needs a fixed-layout document rather than a navigable GPS file. Converting the data to PDF preserves a visual map or route record that recipients can open without GPS software.

What the GPX format is

GPX, or GPS Exchange Format, is an XML-based format for exchanging geographic data. A file can contain tracks recorded by a receiver, planned routes, and waypoints such as addresses, campsites, or trail junctions. It may also include elevation, timestamps, names, descriptions, links, and application-specific extension data.

GPS receivers, Garmin devices, smartphones, cycling computers, fitness applications, hiking software, and mapping programs commonly create or import .gpx files. A GPX file stores coordinates and related attributes; it does not normally contain the visual topographic or street map shown by a navigation application.

What the PDF format is

PDF is a fixed-layout document format that preserves page size, positioning, fonts, line weights, and images across operating systems and printers. A PDF route sheet can include a map, track or route line, waypoint labels, scale bar, north arrow, elevation profile, distance, and notes.

The result is usually a visual representation, not an equivalent navigable track. PDF export generally does not preserve GPX timestamps, elevation samples, metadata, route instructions, or device-specific navigation behavior in a form that a GPS device can import.

This free option requires no software installation. Depending on the converter and the file, the output may be a route-data document or a basic rendered map rather than a detailed topographic map. A GPX file alone cannot supply missing map imagery, street names, or terrain shading.

Using QGIS for layout control

QGIS is appropriate when the output needs a chosen projection, scale, paper size, labels, basemap, or print layout.

1. Install QGIS and create or open a project.
2. Choose Layer → Add Layer → Add Vector Layer, select route.gpx, and open it.
3. In the GPX import dialog, load the required tracks, routes, and waypoints. These may appear as separate layers.
4. Set line colors and widths in the layer styling controls. Label only the waypoints that remain legible at the intended scale.
5. Add a permitted basemap if needed, such as an approved XYZ tile source. Check its licensing, attribution, and offline-availability requirements.
6. Choose Project → New Print Layout, select the page size and orientation, and use Add Map to draw the map frame.
7. Add a scale bar, north arrow, legend, title, or other required map elements.
8. Choose Layout → Export as PDF and select the required output settings before saving.

QGIS can export the GPX geometry on a plain background when no basemap is added. This avoids dependence on an internet connection and may be preferable when map-data licensing or attribution is a concern.

Quality and compatibility limits

The appearance of the exported PDF depends on how geographic coordinates are rendered and whether separate map data is available. A route shown in a phone application may therefore look different from the PDF, even when the underlying coordinates are identical.

Check the map extent, projection, and labels before exporting. Invalid coordinates, extremely dense recorded tracks, or routes crossing the antimeridian can cause incorrect rendering or unnecessarily large files. Large raster basemaps may also increase PDF size.

For printing, use vector route lines where possible. Export raster map layers at about 150–300 dpi for normal print use; a low-resolution screenshot remains blurry when enlarged. Keep the original .gpx file with the PDF if the route must later be edited, analyzed, or loaded onto a navigation device.
