How to convert gpx to gdb file

Garmin MapSource and some older Garmin workflows require a .gdb database rather than GPX. Converting the file makes its waypoints, routes, and tracks available for editing or transfer in software that cannot open GPX.

What the GPX format is

GPX (GPS Exchange Format) is an XML-based format used by GPS receivers, mapping applications, fitness platforms, and route-planning services. A GPX file can contain waypoints, routes, and tracks, with coordinates, elevations, timestamps, names, descriptions, and other extension data.

Handheld GPS receivers, cycling computers, Garmin BaseCamp, Gaia GPS, Google Earth exports, Strava, Komoot, and many other applications create or accept GPX files. Typical sources include recorded activities, planned routes, and data exported for transfer between mapping programs.

What the GDB format is

In a Garmin conversion, GDB normally means the proprietary Garmin MapSource database format, not an Esri file geodatabase. Garmin GDB is a binary container for Garmin navigation data such as waypoints, routes, and tracks, and is primarily associated with MapSource and older Garmin software.

GDB can keep a Garmin data collection in a single database, but it is less suitable than GPX for general exchange. Many current applications cannot read or write it, and support can vary between Garmin software versions.

Convert with GPSBabel

GPSBabel is the most practical desktop option for this conversion and runs on Windows, macOS, and Linux. Install it from the official GPSBabel website, then run:

gpsbabel -i gpx -f input.gpx -o garmin_gdb -F output.gdb

For example:

gpsbabel -i gpx -f hike.gpx -o garmin_gdb -F hike.gdb

Use full paths when the files are in different folders:

gpsbabel -i gpx -f "C:\Users\Name\Downloads\hike.gpx" -o garmin_gdb -F "C:\Users\Name\Documents\hike.gdb"

In the graphical interface, select GPX XML as the input format, choose the source file, select Garmin MapSource or Garmin GDB as the output format, specify a filename ending in .gdb, and start the conversion. Format labels differ between GPSBabel versions.

Convert with Garmin software

In MapSource or a BaseCamp version that provides GDB export, import the GPX with File → Import or by dragging it into a list. Inspect the imported items, select the required list or data, and use File → Export or File → Export Selected. Choose Garmin Database or MapSource Database, if available, and save the file with a .gdb extension.

MapSource has the most direct relationship with GDB. Some newer BaseCamp releases prioritize GPX or Garmin XML and do not show GDB in every export dialog; use GPSBabel when the format is unavailable.

Use an online converter

GPS Visualizer's file-conversion tools may offer Garmin GDB output for compatible GPX inputs. Upload the GPX, select the Garmin GDB output when it is listed, run the conversion, and download the result. Online format availability can change, so verify that the output specifically says Garmin GDB rather than a different Garmin or GPS format.

Do not upload private tracks, home locations, client data, or sensitive travel history. Use GPSBabel or installed Garmin software for confidential files, large datasets, and batch processing.

Check the converted data

Open the source GPX in a map application before conversion and verify the expected waypoints, route, and track. Open the resulting GDB in MapSource or compatible Garmin software and check item counts, names, route order, timestamps, and track appearance.

GPX extensions are not standardized between applications. Heart rate, cadence, temperature, power, geocache fields, custom symbols, and other application-specific metadata may be discarded or changed. Garmin software or older devices may also split, filter, or truncate routes and tracks because of limits on route points, track points, or waypoint counts.

Keep the original GPX as the archival copy. Use GDB only where Garmin software requires it, and use GPX for sharing with mapping and fitness applications.

When .gdb means an Esri geodatabase

An Esri file geodatabase is a directory whose name ends in .gdb; it is unrelated to Garmin GDB. In ArcGIS Pro, create or select a file geodatabase and run GPX To Features to import GPX waypoints, routes, or tracks into feature classes. GPSBabel and Garmin software do not create an Esri file geodatabase.

Frequently asked questions

Is the GPX to GDB converter free?

Yes, converting GPX to GDB on 101convert.com is completely free. No registration, email address or installation is required. If you need a higher file size limit or want to convert more files at once, see our plans.

How large can my GPX file be?

You can upload GPX files up to 50 MB and convert up to 20 files at once in a single batch.

What happens to my uploaded files?

Files are processed automatically and deleted from our servers within a few minutes after conversion. We never view or share your files.

Do I need to install any software to convert GPX to GDB?

No. The GPX to GDB conversion runs entirely online in your browser and works on Windows, Mac, Linux, Android and iPhone.

Did the conversion fail?

In most cases, the cause is an incorrect file format. Please upload a valid GPX file for this GPX to GDB conversion. Occasionally, the issue may be on our side. We analyze recurring conversion failures and disable or fix the converter if we detect a defect.

Will converting GPX to GDB keep my waypoints, routes, and tracks?

Usually, the main waypoints, routes, and track points are carried into the GDB file. Extra GPX information that the target format does not support, such as custom extensions or some timestamps and symbols, may be omitted.

Will my GPX route look the same after converting to GDB?

The route may be recalculated or displayed differently by the software that opens the GDB file. This can happen when routing preferences, map data, or route-point details are not transferred from the GPX file.

Why will my converted GDB file not open?

GDB files can be tied to particular generations of navigation software, so an incompatible program may reject the file even when the conversion succeeded. A damaged or unusually structured GPX file can also cause conversion problems.

Can I edit a GDB file after converting from GPX?

Yes, it remains structured navigation data rather than a flattened map image, so compatible mapping software can usually edit its waypoints, routes, and tracks. Editing may still remove fields that the software does not support.
