Free online GPX to JPG converter

A static map image is useful when a report, presentation, email, messaging app, or image-only publishing system cannot open GPS data. Rendering the file creates a view of the route as pixels; it does not preserve the original geographic features for navigation or editing.

What GPX contains

GPX (GPS Exchange Format) is an XML-based format for exchanging geographic data. A .gpx file can contain tracks made from recorded track points, planned routes, waypoints, coordinates, elevations, timestamps, and optional application-specific extensions. GPS receivers, sports watches, Garmin BaseCamp, Strava, Gaia GPS, QGIS, and other navigation or GIS software commonly import and export GPX files.

GPX has no inherent visual appearance or basemap. A mapping application must choose the visible extent, coordinate projection, line style, symbols, labels, and background map before it can produce an image.

What JPG stores

JPG, also called JPEG, is a compressed raster format that stores colored pixels. It is widely supported by browsers, phones, office software, printers, and publishing systems, and often creates smaller files than PNG when the image contains aerial imagery or other photographic content.

A JPG cannot retain editable GPX tracks, routes, waypoints, timestamps, elevation records, or interactive map behavior. JPEG also has no transparency channel. Keep the original .gpx file with the image if the route may later be edited, analyzed, or loaded into a navigation device.

Use the built-in converter

1. Open the GPX-to-JPG converter on 101convert.com; it runs in a web browser without installed software.
2. Upload the .gpx file.
3. Choose JPG or JPEG as the output format and start the conversion.
4. Download the result and check that the complete track, route, waypoints, labels, and map extent are visible.

The appearance depends on the converter’s rendering options. Some conversions produce a map with a basemap, while others render only the GPX geometry on a plain background. Files containing multiple tracks, route segments, or dense waypoint groups may need layer selection or styling before export. Do not upload private home locations or sensitive activity data unless the service’s handling policy is acceptable.

Create a controlled map in QGIS

QGIS is the better choice when the image needs a defined scale, precise extent, custom symbols, labels, attribution, or print dimensions. It is available for Windows, macOS, and Linux.

1. Open QGIS and select Layer → Add Layer → Add Vector Layer. Choose the .gpx file.
2. In the GPX import dialog, add the required sublayers, such as tracks, routes, and waypoints. A GPX file can expose more than one of these layers.
3. Right-click a loaded layer and choose Zoom to Layer. Add a permitted basemap through the Browser panel’s XYZ Tiles sources if background mapping is required.
4. Set track colors and widths in Layer Properties → Symbology. Configure waypoint symbols and labels in Layer Properties → Labels. Increase line width and label size when the image will be printed or reduced in a document.
5. Select Project → New Print Layout, add a map item, and set its extent. Add a title, scale bar, north arrow, legend, and required map attribution.
6. Select Layout → Export as Image, choose JPEG, and set the output dimensions or resolution. For a screen or document, specify the required pixel width; for print, approximately 300 DPI is a common target.

Export resolution makes lines and labels sharper but cannot add positional accuracy or missing points to the source track. A high-resolution image still represents only the coordinates and sampling recorded in the GPX file.

Use Google Earth Pro for a quick view

Google Earth Pro can display an imported GPX file over aerial imagery or terrain. Open it through File → Open, adjust the camera and visible layers, then use File → Save → Save Image. This method is quicker than building a QGIS layout but provides less control over scale, labels, symbols, and page composition. Keep any required Google Earth imagery attribution and check the provider’s terms before redistributing the image.

Quality and compatibility limits

JPEG uses lossy compression, which can blur small labels and create artifacts around thin, high-contrast route lines. Use a high JPEG quality setting, commonly 85–95, and avoid repeatedly opening and resaving the same file.

PNG is usually a better destination when the map contains fine linework, small text, flat colors, or transparency and the receiving system accepts it. TIFF may be preferable for some print or GIS documentation workflows. Neither alternative replaces the original GPX.

Basemap tiles and aerial imagery are licensed separately from the GPX data. Preserve required attribution for OpenStreetMap, Google, or another provider, and verify redistribution terms for commercial, printed, or high-volume use. If no basemap is selected or network tiles are unavailable, the exported JPG may contain only the GPX lines and symbols against a plain background.
