Source format: PDF
PDF (Portable Document Format) is a fixed-layout document format used for manuals, maps, reports, scanned documents, forms, and brochures. It preserves page appearance, but it does not usually store geographic data in a structured way that can be converted directly into GPX.
Target format: GPX
GPX (GPS Exchange Format) is an XML-based format for storing waypoints, routes, and tracks. It is widely supported by GPS devices, outdoor apps, and mapping software.
Can a PDF be converted to GPX?
Usually not directly. A PDF is a page format, while GPX is a structured location-data format. If the PDF contains coordinates, waypoint lists, route tables, or map annotations, you can extract that information and build a GPX file. If the PDF is only a scanned map or an image, you will need OCR or manual digitizing first.
How to convert PDF to GPX
- Check the PDF for usable location data. Look for latitude/longitude values, waypoint names, route tables, or survey notes. If the PDF is a map, determine whether it includes coordinate grids or readable labels.
- Extract the text or tables. Use Adobe Acrobat Pro, Tabula, or pdftotext to pull coordinates and related data from the PDF. For scanned PDFs, use OCR first.
- Clean and organize the coordinates. Make sure the values use the correct format and datum. GPX commonly uses WGS 84 coordinates, so coordinates from the PDF may need conversion if they use another system.
- Create the GPX file. Use QGIS, Garmin BaseCamp, or GPSBabel to turn the extracted data into waypoints, routes, or tracks. GPSBabel is useful for converting between GPS formats, but it cannot infer GPX from arbitrary PDF content on its own.
- Export as GPX. In QGIS, load the coordinate data and export it as GPX. In Garmin BaseCamp, create waypoints or routes and export them via File → Export.
- Verify the result. Open the GPX file in GPXSee, Garmin BaseCamp, Gaia GPS, or another GPS app to confirm that the points or tracks appear correctly.
Best tools for the job
QGIS is the best choice when the PDF contains coordinates or map data that can be digitized into points or tracks. Garmin BaseCamp is useful for manually creating and exporting routes and waypoints. GPSBabel is excellent once the data has already been extracted into a GPS-friendly format.
Reputable online options: There is no dependable one-click online converter for arbitrary PDF to GPX conversion. However, online PDF-to-text or PDF-to-CSV tools can help extract coordinates, and some web mapping services can generate GPX after you paste waypoint data. Be careful with sensitive location data when uploading files to online services.
Important limitations
PDF to GPX is not a true format conversion in most cases. If the PDF is a scanned map, you will need OCR or manual tracing before a GPX file can be created. If the PDF contains only visual route lines without coordinates, the result will be approximate and may require digitizing in GIS software. Accuracy depends on the source PDF, the coordinate system used, and the quality of the extracted data.
Note about .gpx and Guitar Pro
The extension .gpx can also refer to Guitar Pro files, which are music notation files and are unrelated to GPS data. A PDF music score cannot normally be converted directly to Guitar Pro .gpx files. Some tools can convert PDF sheet music to MusicXML or other notation formats first, which may then be imported into Guitar Pro, but results vary and manual correction is often needed.
