A PDF is useful when a GeoJSON map must be printed, emailed, archived, or opened on a device without GIS software. Conversion renders the GeoJSON features as a fixed map page; it does not normally preserve the editable GIS layer structure.

What the GEOJSON format is

GeoJSON is a JSON-based format for geographic data. It stores points, lines, polygons, multipolygon geometries, feature properties, and optionally a collection of features. Coordinates are usually longitude and latitude in the WGS 84 coordinate reference system, although applications may transform them during import.

GIS applications, web-mapping libraries, GPS tools, surveying software, and scripts commonly create GeoJSON files. You may encounter .geojson or .json files when exporting map layers, GPS waypoints, routes, tracks, boundaries, or location datasets.

What the PDF format is

PDF is a page-description format designed to preserve layout, text, vector graphics, and images across operating systems and printers. It is suitable for printable maps, field handouts, planning documents, reports, legal records, and static map attachments.

A PDF normally shows the rendered appearance of the GeoJSON layer rather than its original feature properties and editable geometry. A standard PDF viewer cannot usually select a feature, inspect its attributes, change its symbology, or calculate distances from the embedded map.

How to actually convert GEOJSON to PDF

Using QGIS for controlled map output

  1. Install and open QGIS, then choose Layer → Add Layer → Add Vector Layer.
  2. Select the .geojson file. QGIS displays the features and uses the layer's coordinate reference system; assign the correct CRS if the data is missing or incorrect.
  3. Set the appearance in the layer's Properties → Symbology panel. Choose colors, line widths, marker symbols, labels, and a categorized or graduated style based on feature attributes.
  4. Set a useful map projection before composing the page. A projected CRS is generally better for local distance and scale representation than unprojected latitude/longitude coordinates.
  5. Open Project → New Print Layout, create a page size and orientation, then use Add Map to place the map on the page. Add a title, legend, scale bar, north arrow, attribution, and coordinate grid when required.
  6. Adjust the map extent and scale in the layout. Inspect line and label visibility at the intended print size rather than relying only on the zoomed-in map canvas.
  7. Choose Layout → Export as PDF. Select the page or full layout, set the output filename, and enable vector output when possible. Rasterize only layers that contain effects or symbols that do not export correctly as vectors.

For a quick file rendering, upload the GeoJSON to the free converter on 101convert.com, choose PDF as the output format, and download the generated document. This is convenient when installing GIS software is unnecessary, but it generally provides less control over CRS selection, labeling, page layout, legends, and map styling than QGIS.

Using a web map or GIS application

Applications such as ArcGIS Pro and other desktop GIS programs follow the same process: import the GeoJSON layer, configure its symbology and projection, create a map layout, and use the application's PDF export command. A browser map can sometimes be printed with Print → Save as PDF, but browser printing may omit map tiles, crop the extent, lower image resolution, or exclude legends and controls.

Quality, compatibility, and limitations

GeoJSON is data, not a page layout, so the converter must choose a map extent, scale, page size, symbols, and labels. Large files with many vertices can produce slow rendering or oversized PDFs; simplify geometry only when the loss of detail is acceptable.

Confirm that the coordinate reference system is correct before export. An incorrect CRS can place features in the wrong location or create severe distortion. Check labels for overlap, thin lines for visibility, and map tiles for sufficient resolution at the selected page size.

Most exported PDFs are static visual documents. If recipients need searchable attributes, editable geometry, routing, or spatial analysis, provide the original GeoJSON alongside the PDF. If the recipient needs to open the PDF in GIS software with spatial coordinates, enable QGIS's geospatial PDF option when available and verify compatibility with the target application; ordinary PDF export does not guarantee georeferencing.
