What the GEOJSON format is
GeoJSON is a JSON-based geographic format for storing points, lines, polygons, and collections of features together with attribute data. Coordinates are normally expressed as longitude and latitude in the WGS 84 coordinate reference system.
QGIS, ArcGIS, web-mapping libraries such as Leaflet and OpenLayers, GPS applications, surveying tools, and geographic APIs commonly create or export .geojson files. You may encounter GeoJSON when downloading boundaries, routes, points of interest, GPS tracks, or map data from a GIS system or web service.
What the PNG format is
PNG is a lossless raster image format suited to rendered maps, screenshots, reports, presentations, and web pages. It supports transparent backgrounds, which can be useful when displaying lines, points, or polygons over another image.
A PNG stores colored pixels rather than geographic features. It does not normally preserve GeoJSON properties, feature editing, coordinate reference information, or interactive map behavior. Use PNG when visual appearance matters more than GIS functionality.
How to convert GEOJSON to PNG
Using QGIS for a controlled map export
- Install and open QGIS, then choose Layer → Add Layer → Add Vector Layer.
- Select the
.geojsonfile and click Add. QGIS displays the features using the layer's coordinate reference system. - Right-click the layer and select Zoom to Layer. Open Layer Properties → Symbology to set line widths, fill colors, point symbols, labels, and transparency.
- For a map with a title, legend, scale bar, or north arrow, choose Project → New Print Layout, create a layout, and use Add Map to place the map canvas on the page.
- In the layout, choose Layout → Export as Image, select PNG, set the output dimensions or resolution, and save the file.
For a plain image without layout elements, use the map canvas export command available in your QGIS version, or export from a print layout containing only the map. Set a higher resolution such as 300 DPI for print work; 96–150 DPI is usually sufficient for screen use.
Using the built-in online converter
You can convert the file on 101convert.com without installing software: upload the GeoJSON file, select PNG as the output format, start the conversion, and download the rendered image. This method is suitable for a quick static result, but it offers less control over map projection, styling, labels, extent, and output resolution than QGIS.
Quality and compatibility limitations
PNG export is a rendering operation, not a direct data-preserving format conversion. Overlapping features, labels, and styling are flattened into the selected pixel dimensions; enlarging the PNG later can make lines and text appear blurred.
Check the map extent before exporting. A layer containing one distant outlier can make the main features appear tiny when QGIS zooms to the full layer. Reproject data when necessary so the map uses an appropriate projected CRS for the region, especially for scale bars, measurements, or print layouts.
The resulting PNG is usually not georeferenced. If the image must be loaded back into GIS at known coordinates, export a GeoTIFF or provide a separate world file and projection information instead. Keep the original GeoJSON when you may need to edit features, query attributes, change styling, or create another map later.
