How to convert bik to wma file

  • Audio

A game soundtrack or cutscene may be stored in a BIK file, while legacy Windows software or a portable device may require WMA audio. Converting it decodes the Bink audio stream, removes the video, and encodes the result as a .wma file.

What the BIK format is

BIK is the filename extension used by Bink Video, a multimedia format developed by RAD Game Tools for game cutscenes, menus, cinematics, and related media. A BIK file can contain video, one or more audio streams, or both. Its audio is normally compressed with a Bink-specific codec rather than stored as a separate WAV or WMA stream.

Game installation folders named movies, video, or cutscenes commonly contain BIK files. Renaming .bik to .wma does not convert the file; the Bink stream must be decoded and re-encoded.

What the WMA format is

WMA, or Windows Media Audio, is an audio codec family developed by Microsoft. A .wma file typically contains Windows Media Audio in an ASF-based file container. The most broadly compatible choice for this conversion is WMA Standard, encoded by FFmpeg as wmav2.

WMA produces smaller files than uncompressed WAV at comparable listening quality and may be required by older Windows applications or portable players. It has narrower support than MP3, AAC, and Opus, so verify that the target program or device accepts WMA before converting.

How to convert BIK to WMA

Using FFmpeg

FFmpeg is the most flexible desktop option when the installed build includes the Bink demuxer and the relevant Bink audio decoder.

  1. Install a current FFmpeg build and make the ffmpeg and ffprobe commands available in a terminal.
  2. Inspect the source file with ffprobe -hide_banner input.bik. Confirm that it contains an Audio stream and identify the required stream if there is more than one.
  3. Convert the first audio stream with:
ffmpeg -i input.bik -map 0:a:0 -vn -c:a wmav2 -b:a 192k output.wma

-map 0:a:0 selects the first audio stream, -vn excludes video, -c:a wmav2 selects WMA Standard, and -b:a 192k sets the output bitrate. Use -map 0:a:1 or another audio-stream index when the required track is not first.

Use 128k for a smaller result or 256k when the target software supports it. Do not add -ac 2 unless stereo is required, because that option downmixes multichannel audio. FFmpeg normally retains the source sample rate and channel layout unless conversion options override them.

Using the built-in online converter

You can convert the file for free on 101convert.com without installing software. Select BIK as the input format and WMA as the output format, upload the file, start the conversion, and download the resulting audio file. The converter can reject a BIK variant it cannot decode, a file with no audio stream, or a damaged game asset.

Quality and compatibility limits

Bink audio is often already lossy. Encoding it again as WMA adds another lossy-generation step, and increasing the WMA bitrate cannot restore information discarded by the original Bink encoding. If preservation quality matters more than the required output format, decode the source to WAV or another lossless intermediate before making additional versions; this does not recover information already lost in Bink.

A BIK file containing only video has no audio to export. Some games use Bink variants or audio configurations that a particular FFmpeg build does not support. If direct conversion fails, try an up-to-date FFmpeg build or the RAD Video Tools supplied for Bink assets, then export or decode the audio before encoding it as WMA.

For older players, use WMA Standard with wmav2 rather than WMA Professional or WMA Lossless, and avoid unusual sample rates or multichannel layouts. Check the result with ffprobe output.wma and test it in the application or device that requires the file.
