Convert txt to eml

Convert TXT to EML

Create a standards-based EML message from plain TXT text for mail import or archiving.

Convert TXT files online

We don’t have a dedicated online converter for TXT to EML yet, but you can convert TXT files online to these and more formats:

How to convert txt to eml file

A mail client or archive system may require an email message instead of a plain document, so a TXT file must be placed in a valid email envelope. This is useful when importing notes or logs into mail software, sharing a message file, or preserving text in an email archive.

What the TXT format is

TXT is a plain-text format containing characters without email headers, MIME structure, formatting, attachments, or embedded message metadata. Notepad, TextEdit, code editors, terminal tools, export utilities, and many other applications create .txt files for notes, logs, configuration data, and unformatted copied content.

A TXT file normally does not identify the intended sender, recipient, subject, date, or character encoding. Those values must be supplied during conversion when the result needs to behave like an email.

What the EML format is

EML is a single-message email file containing Internet message headers and a body, normally using RFC 5322 message syntax and MIME rules for character sets, HTML, and attachments. Thunderbird, Microsoft Outlook, Apple Mail, Windows Mail, and many archiving or forensic applications can open or import EML files.

An EML file can preserve fields such as From, To, Subject, Date, and Message-ID. It can therefore be imported as a message, stored in a mail archive, or transferred between compatible systems. Converting plain text cannot recover original headers, formatting, attachments, or inline images that were not included in the TXT file.

Convert a few files with Thunderbird

  1. Install Mozilla Thunderbird and create or select a local account. A local account prevents the message from being sent accidentally.
  2. Choose New Message, select the account that should supply the sender address, and enter the intended To and Subject values.
  3. Open the TXT file, copy its contents into the plain-text message body, and preserve the original line breaks.
  4. Choose File → Save As → File, select the EML format if offered, and save the message. If the installed version does not show EML directly, save the message as a draft and use its message-export option.
  5. Open the saved file in the target mail application and check the headers, text encoding, and line breaks.

Thunderbird is suitable for manual conversion because it generates normal email headers and MIME structure. It does not infer missing message metadata from arbitrary TXT content, and the sender address must correspond to the selected account or a configured identity.

Batch conversion with Python

Python's standard-library email package creates an EML file locally without uploading the source:

from email.message import EmailMessage
from email.policy import SMTP
from email.utils import formatdate, make_msgid
from pathlib import Path

source = Path("input.txt")
output = Path("output.eml")
body = source.read_text(encoding="utf-8")

message = EmailMessage(policy=SMTP)
message["From"] = "sender@example.com"
message["To"] = "recipient@example.com"
message["Subject"] = "Imported TXT file"
message["Date"] = formatdate(localtime=True)
message["Message-ID"] = make_msgid()
message.set_content(body, subtype="plain", charset="utf-8")
output.write_bytes(message.as_bytes())

Save the code as convert_txt_to_eml.py, replace the addresses and filenames, then run:

python convert_txt_to_eml.py

Use the source file's actual encoding instead of utf-8 when necessary, such as cp1252 for some legacy Windows files. The script creates a plain-text MIME message and does not send it. The SMTP policy produces email-compatible CRLF line endings and header folding.

Use an online converter

An online service such as Zamzar can be used when its current TXT-to-EML option is available and installing software is not practical. Before uploading, confirm that the service supports both formats, uses HTTPS, states how long files are retained, and provides deletion controls. Do not upload private correspondence, addresses, credentials, or other confidential content; Thunderbird or the local Python method keeps that data on the computer.

Quality and compatibility limits

  • Renaming notes.txt to notes.eml changes only the filename. It does not add the headers and MIME structure that mail applications normally expect.
  • A TXT source has no trustworthy original sender, recipient, timestamp, threading information, HTML formatting, inline images, or attachments. Add these separately when required.
  • Do not copy lines such as From: or Content-Type: from untrusted TXT content into the message headers; they can change how the message is parsed.
  • Test the result in the destination application. Some programs open EML files but import only the body, while others reject invalid addresses, dates, line endings, or MIME boundaries.
