Many mail clients, archives, and migration utilities accept .eml but not Outlook's .oft template format. Converting an OFT creates a standalone message file that can be opened, shared, indexed, or imported outside Outlook.
What the OFT format is
OFT is Microsoft Outlook's template format for reusable email messages and other Outlook items, including meeting requests and contact forms. Outlook creates an OFT through File → Save As → Outlook Template.
An OFT can contain a subject, recipients, plain-text or HTML body, formatting, inline images, attachments, signatures, and Outlook-specific item properties. Opening it normally creates a new Outlook item; it is not a record of a delivered message and usually contains no delivery history.
What the EML format is
EML is a file containing one Internet email message represented by headers and MIME body parts. It can store plain text, HTML, inline resources, and attachments, and is supported by applications such as Mozilla Thunderbird, Apple Mail, eM Client, and many archiving and migration systems.
EML is useful when the destination does not support Outlook templates or when messages must be stored as individual files. It is not a complete mailbox database, and its portability depends on the receiving application correctly handling MIME and Outlook-specific HTML.
How to convert an OFT to EML
Using a desktop converter
- Install a converter that explicitly lists
OFTas an input andEMLas an output, such as SysTools OFT Converter or BitRecover OFT Converter. Obtain the installer from the vendor's official website. - Use Add File or Add Folder to select one or more OFT files.
- Select
EMLas the export format, choose an output folder, and start the conversion. - Open several output files in the target mail client. Check the subject, recipients, body formatting, inline images, character encoding, and attachments.
Desktop software is preferable for batches and confidential mail because the source files remain on the local computer. Check the product's current feature list before purchase: some converters support OFT only in a paid edition, and trial versions may limit exports.
Using an online converter
- Choose a service that currently lists both OFT input and EML output, such as Aspose.Email's online converter or GroupDocs Conversion. Format availability can change, so confirm it on the conversion page before uploading.
- Upload the OFT, select
EML, run the conversion, and download the result. - Delete the uploaded source and result through the service's controls when available, and review its retention and processing terms.
Online conversion suits occasional use with non-confidential files. Do not upload messages containing personal, legal, financial, or business-sensitive content unless the provider's handling and retention policies are acceptable.
Editing the template before conversion
A direct conversion exports the content stored in the OFT; it does not send the message, resolve placeholders, or automatically insert values from an external template system. To personalize it, open the OFT in classic Microsoft Outlook, fill in the recipients and variable text, and save the completed item as File → Save As → Outlook Message Format - Unicode (*.msg). Convert that MSG with a converter supporting MSG input and EML output. Outlook desktop generally does not provide a native EML export option, so renaming .oft or .msg to .eml is not valid.
Compatibility limits
OFT and EML represent different kinds of data: an OFT is an Outlook item template, while EML is a MIME email file. Macros, Outlook rules, custom forms, voting buttons, tracking options, sensitivity settings, and other Outlook-only properties have no standard EML equivalent and may be discarded.
HTML normally transfers, but Outlook stationery, VML graphics, linked images, unsupported fonts, conditional formatting, and embedded resources can render differently in another mail client. Attachments and inline images should be tested in the destination application; changing the filename extension does not perform a conversion.
A template may not contain meaningful final-message headers such as Date, Message-ID, or delivery and receipt headers. A converter may generate some headers, but the resulting EML is not evidence that the message was sent or delivered.
