OFT files are Outlook templates, but browsers and many web editors cannot open them directly. Converting one to HTML makes the message body viewable in a browser, editable as web markup, or suitable for website and email archives.
What the OFT format is
OFT is the Microsoft Outlook Template format. Outlook desktop creates OFT files for reusable email messages and custom forms, including predefined recipients, subject lines, formatting, signatures, attachments, and Outlook-specific fields. You typically encounter them in a user’s template folder, in shared mail systems, or as attachments intended to create a new Outlook message.
An OFT file is not just an HTML document: it contains Outlook MAPI data and template instructions. Its layout may include an HTML or Rich Text message body, while recipients, flags, forms, and other properties remain specific to Outlook.
What the HTML format is
HTML is the markup format used by web browsers and many email systems. An HTML file stores page structure, formatted text, links, tables, images, and styles using elements such as <p>, <a>, and <img>.
HTML is useful when the converted content must open without Outlook, be edited in a code or web editor, displayed in a browser, or incorporated into a website. It does not preserve Outlook template behavior, message metadata, or interactive Outlook fields.
How to convert OFT to HTML
Using Microsoft Outlook
- Keep a copy of the original
.oftfile. - Open it in classic Microsoft Outlook. Double-clicking the file normally creates a new message from the template. If needed, use Home → New Items → More Items → Choose Form, then select User Templates in File System.
- Check the message body, images, links, and attachments. Remove Outlook-only fields if the result is intended for a browser.
- Choose File → Save As.
- Set the file type to
HTML (*.htm; *.html), enter a filename, and save it. - Open the resulting
.htmlfile in a browser and test every link and image. Edit the source with a text or HTML editor if the layout needs adjustment.
Using the online converter
You can convert the file on 101convert.com for free without installing software. Upload the OFT file, choose HTML as the output format, start the conversion, and download the generated file. Do not upload templates containing confidential recipients, customer data, or private message content unless the service’s privacy requirements permit it.
Quality and compatibility limits
Outlook may save images as local references or alongside the HTML file rather than embedding them. Keep any generated asset folder with the HTML document, or replace the image paths with accessible URLs before publishing it.
Outlook-specific fields, voting buttons, forms, tracking features, signatures, embedded objects, and attachments may be omitted or converted into nonfunctional markup. HTML-to-browser conversion preserves the visible message body more reliably than the full OFT template.
HTML saved by Outlook can contain Microsoft-specific markup and inline styles that render differently across browsers and email clients. For a public web page, remove proprietary markup and test the result in the browsers and email applications that will receive it.
