What the MAFF format is

MAFF, or Mozilla Archive Format, is a ZIP-based format used to save complete web pages for offline viewing. Mozilla Firefox and the Mozilla Archive Format extension created MAFF files; older Firefox installations and archived browser profiles are the most common places to encounter them.

A MAFF archive can contain the page's HTML, images, CSS, scripts, metadata, and other downloaded resources. One archive may also contain more than one saved page, so it is not always equivalent to a single HTML document.

What the HTML format is

HTML is the markup format browsers use to display web pages. An HTML file can be opened directly in Firefox, Chrome, Edge, Safari, or another browser, edited in a text or code editor, and placed on a web server.

For a MAFF conversion, HTML normally means the archived page's main document plus a folder of locally saved assets. Keeping those assets preserves more of the original appearance than copying only the HTML file.

How to convert MAFF to HTML

Extract the archive with a desktop utility

1. Make a backup of the original page.maff file.
2. Open it with 7-Zip, WinRAR, or another ZIP-compatible archive utility. If the utility does not recognize the extension, rename a copy from page.maff to page.zip.
3. Extract the archive into a new folder, such as page_html. On systems with the unzip command, use unzip page.maff -d page_html.
4. Find the extracted main document, usually named index.html or another .html file. If the archive contains several page folders, use the metadata in index.rdf and inspect each page entry.
5. Open the HTML file in a browser. Keep its related image, stylesheet, script, and resource folders in their original relative locations; moving only the HTML file can produce missing images or incorrect formatting.
6. Copy the required HTML file and its asset folders to the destination, or edit the HTML with a code editor. Rename the main document only if its relative links remain valid.

For long-term preservation, retain the original .maff alongside the extracted HTML directory. The MAFF preserves the archived package and metadata, while HTML provides easier access and editing.
