Free online ZIP to AVI converter

A ZIP archive often contains an AVI video that a media player, editor, or older device cannot access until the archive is unpacked. If the archive contains another video format, the video must be decoded and re-encoded into an AVI container after extraction.

What the ZIP format is

ZIP is a lossless archive format that stores one or more files and folders in a single package, usually with compression. Windows File Explorer, macOS Archive Utility, 7-Zip, WinRAR, and command-line tools create and extract ZIP archives. You commonly encounter ZIP files as downloaded media packages, project deliveries, backups, and email attachments.

ZIP does not define a video format. It may contain an AVI file, several AVI files, subtitles, metadata, or a different video format. Compressing an AVI into ZIP does not change its codec, resolution, frame rate, or playback behavior.

What the AVI format is

AVI, or Audio Video Interleave, is a multimedia container developed by Microsoft. It can store video and audio streams encoded with different codecs, including older codecs such as DV, MJPEG, and uncompressed video.

AVI is supported by many Windows applications, legacy editing systems, and older playback hardware. Its broad historical compatibility is offset by limited support for modern codecs, weak built-in metadata and streaming features, and potentially very large files when using lightly compressed or uncompressed video.

How to actually convert ZIP to AVI

When the ZIP already contains an AVI file

1. Save the ZIP archive to a local folder.
2. In Windows, right-click the archive and choose Extract all; in 7-Zip, choose 7-Zip → Extract Here or Extract to “folder name\”. On macOS, double-click the archive or use The Unarchiver.
3. Open the extracted folder and locate files ending in .avi. The operation is extraction, not video conversion, so the extracted file retains its original quality.
4. Play the AVI with VLC Media Player or inspect its streams with MediaInfo. Do not rename a non-AVI file to .avi; changing the extension does not convert the video.

From a terminal, extract the archive with unzip package.zip -d extracted on Linux or macOS, or with 7z x package.zip -oextracted where 7-Zip is installed.

When the ZIP contains another video format

1. Extract the archive first and identify the source file, such as .mp4, .mkv, or .mov.
2. Install FFmpeg, then inspect the source with ffprobe input.mp4.
3. For a widely compatible AVI using MPEG-4 Part 2 video and MP3 audio, run ffmpeg -i input.mp4 -c:v mpeg4 -q:v 4 -c:a libmp3lame -b:a 192k output.avi.
4. For an editing-oriented AVI with MJPEG video, use ffmpeg -i input.mp4 -c:v mjpeg -q:v 3 -c:a pcm_s16le output.avi. This produces much larger files but reduces decoding demands and avoids inter-frame compression.
5. Open output.avi in the target application and verify synchronization, resolution, frame rate, and audio playback before deleting the source.

Quality, compatibility, and limitations

AVI is a container rather than a single codec specification. A file named output.avi may still fail on a device if it uses an unsupported codec, audio format, pixel format, or frame rate. Confirm the target device’s required combination before choosing FFmpeg settings.

ZIP compression usually saves little space on already compressed video. Keep the original archive until the extracted or converted file has been tested, and avoid opening archives from untrusted sources because embedded files can contain executable malware.
