Convert ISZ to RAR

Users typically convert an ISZ image to RAR when they need to distribute or store its contents as a conventional archive supported by WinRAR. The conversion requires an intermediate extraction or ISO conversion because RAR software generally does not treat ISZ as a native input format.

What the ISZ format is

ISZ is a compressed ISO disk-image format created by EZB Systems UltraISO. It can contain a CD, DVD, or bootable installation image and may use encryption, password protection, compression, or split image segments such as image.isz, image.i01, and image.i02.

You usually encounter ISZ files when downloading optical-disc backups, software installers, operating-system media, or images created with UltraISO. An ISZ is still a disk image: mounting or converting it preserves the image structure, while extracting it produces the files stored on the disc.

What the RAR format is

RAR is a general-purpose archive format used by WinRAR and the RAR command-line tools. It can store many files in one archive, compress them, split the archive into volumes, add recovery records, and apply optional encryption.

RAR is useful when recipients need an archive rather than a mountable disc image, or when files must be divided into upload-sized parts. RAR5 normally provides better compression and larger-file support than the older RAR4 format, but older extraction programs may support only RAR4.

How to convert ISZ to RAR

Method 1: Preserve the complete disk image

Use this method when the recipient needs the original bootable or mountable image.

1. Install UltraISO on Windows and open the ISZ file with File → Open.
2. Convert it to ISO through Tools → Convert or the equivalent image-conversion command in your UltraISO version. Select ISO as the output format.
3. Open WinRAR, select the resulting image.iso, and choose Add.
4. Set the archive format to RAR, choose RAR5 or RAR4 under the compatibility options, and select OK.

The resulting RAR contains one ISO file. Extracting the RAR restores the ISO, which can then be mounted or written to optical media. It does not make the RAR itself mountable or bootable.

Method 2: Archive the files inside the image

Use this method when recipients need ordinary files and folders rather than the original disc image.

1. Open the ISZ in UltraISO and choose Tools → Convert to create an ISO, or mount the ISZ directly if your installed software supports ISZ mounting.
2. Mount the ISO or open it with an ISO-capable extractor, then copy its contents to a local folder. UltraISO can extract selected files through Action → Extract.
3. In WinRAR, select the extracted folder, choose Add to archive, set the format to RAR, and configure compression, volume size, or password protection.
4. For a command-line conversion after extraction, run rar a -r output.rar extracted\. Add -ma4 when the archive must be readable by software limited to RAR4.

WinRAR is the most practical desktop tool because it creates RAR archives and can preserve directory trees, split volumes, and encryption. 7-Zip can often extract the intermediate ISO, but it cannot create RAR archives; use WinRAR or the RAR command-line utility for the final step.

Quality, compatibility, and limitations

Conversion does not improve the contents of the image. If you archive the ISO as one file, the ISO's boot sectors, filesystem, and disc layout remain unchanged. If you extract the files first, filesystem metadata, boot behavior, disc-sector layout, and some permissions may not be preserved.

Compression may be modest because ISZ and ISO contents often contain already-compressed files such as video, installers, or archives. For faster processing, choose Fast compression; for maximum size reduction, use Best and expect higher CPU and memory use.

Verify the result by opening the RAR and checking its contents. For an image-preserving conversion, compare an SHA-256 hash of the original recovered ISO with a known-good hash; an ISZ hash cannot match an ISO hash because the container formats differ.

Online converters are generally unsuitable for ISZ files: direct ISZ-to-RAR support is uncommon, large disk images require lengthy uploads, and private or bootable media may be exposed to a third party. A local UltraISO-plus-WinRAR workflow avoids those limitations.
