What the PDF format is

PDF, or Portable Document Format, stores fixed-layout pages containing text, fonts, images, vector graphics, forms, annotations, and sometimes embedded files. Adobe Acrobat, Microsoft Word, LibreOffice, web browsers, scanners, and publishing applications create PDFs used for invoices, manuals, scanned records, application forms, and reports.

Archiving does not change the source format: a PDF inside report.rar remains report.pdf. The recipient must extract it with a RAR-capable archive utility before opening it in a PDF reader or editor.

What the RAR format is

RAR is a proprietary archive format that stores one or more files in a single container. It supports compression, archive comments, password encryption, recovery records, and multi-volume archives such as backup.part1.rar and backup.part2.rar.

RAR is useful for bundling a PDF with related files, reducing the number of upload attachments, splitting a large package into fixed-size parts, or encrypting the archive. Recent WinRAR versions create RAR5 archives by default; older extraction software may support only RAR4, so select RAR4 when compatibility with legacy software is required.

How to create a RAR archive

WinRAR on Windows is the most straightforward option when the output must specifically be .rar:

1. Install WinRAR from the official RARLAB website and locate the PDF in File Explorer.
2. Right-click the file and select Add to archive....
3. Set Archive format to RAR. Keep RAR5 unless the recipient needs RAR4 compatibility.
4. Choose Normal compression for most PDFs. Best takes longer and often saves little additional space.
5. Set the archive name and destination, such as report.rar.
6. For encryption, select Set password..., enter a strong password, and enable Encrypt file names if available.
7. Click OK. WinRAR creates the archive without modifying report.pdf.

To create parts for a size-limited upload, enter a value such as 100M in Split to volumes, size. Keep every resulting part together; extraction normally begins with .part1.rar.

The RARLAB command-line utility can perform the same operation on supported Windows, macOS, and Linux installations:

rar a -m5 report.rar report.pdf

a adds the file and -m5 selects maximum compression. Do not place an archive password directly in a shell command if it would remain in command history; use WinRAR’s password dialog or the command-line utility’s interactive password feature where supported.

Many built-in archive tools and 7-Zip installations extract RAR files but cannot create them. Use WinRAR or a RAR creation utility when the required output is .rar; use ZIP or 7z only when the recipient accepts another archive format.

Online conversion options

For a non-confidential PDF, services such as Convertio and Online-Convert may provide an archive converter that accepts PDF input and offers RAR output. Select the PDF, choose RAR as the target, start the conversion, and download the resulting archive. Check the service’s current output-format list because online tools can change supported formats, file-size limits, and password features.

Online conversion uploads the document to a third-party server and may expose its contents through temporary storage or logs. Do not use these services for confidential records unless their retention, deletion, encryption, and processing terms meet your requirements. Desktop software avoids uploading the PDF and provides more reliable control over RAR5/RAR4 selection, encryption, and volume splitting.

Quality and compatibility limits

Archiving does not reduce PDF resolution, alter fonts, remove pages, or change selectable text. PDFs commonly contain already-compressed images and object streams, so RAR may produce only a small size reduction. Reducing scanned-image resolution or recompressing images inside the PDF can save more space, but those operations modify the document itself.

RAR encryption protects the archive contents; RAR5 with encrypted filenames also conceals the archived filenames. Send the password through a separate channel. A forgotten password generally cannot be recovered.

Test the archive by extracting it before sending or uploading it. The recipient needs software compatible with the selected RAR version, and a multi-volume archive cannot normally be extracted if any part is missing or damaged.
