Iso to cdi file conversion

Many disc image tools support both standard ISO (.iso) and DiscJuggler (.cdi) image formats, and some can convert between them. However, ISO to CDI conversion is often limited because the two formats are not fully equivalent.

ISO is a common disc image format used for data CDs, DVDs, and some bootable media. CDI is a DiscJuggler image format that was used mainly for CD authoring and certain console disc images, especially for Sega Dreamcast software.

In many cases, you do not need to convert ISO to CDI. If your target device or emulator supports ISO files, using the original ISO is usually the safest option. Converting to CDI may also lose features such as boot information, audio tracks, or other disc-specific data if the source image contains them.

Important: A simple file rename from .iso to .cdi does not convert the image.

If conversion is required, use software that explicitly supports CDI export. Not all disc image tools can create CDI files, and some can only open them. Also, many modern tools do not support CDI creation at all, so availability depends on the program and version.

Typical workflow:

• Open the ISO in a compatible disc image tool.
• Check whether the program supports Save as or Export to CDI.
• Choose File → Save as or File → Export, then select CDI if available.
• Verify the resulting image in the intended emulator or hardware.

Important: If your goal is to use a Dreamcast image, many CDI files are created from GDI, BIN/CUE, or other disc layouts rather than from ISO alone. In those cases, converting from ISO may not produce a working result.

If you only need to mount or use the disc image on a computer, keep it as ISO unless a specific application requires CDI.
