Convert ISO to CISO

A Wii loader or emulator may require a compressed CISO image, or a CISO may reduce the storage needed for a Wii disc image. The conversion repacks the image without changing its files or logical sectors.

What the ISO format is

An ISO is a raw optical-disc image containing the disc's sectors and filesystem data. Software commonly stores ISO 9660 or UDF discs this way, while Wii ISO files contain the original Wii disc structure rather than a conventional computer-readable filesystem.

Disc-imaging and authoring tools such as ImgBurn, PowerISO, dd, and macOS hdiutil create ISO files. Operating-system installers, software distributions, archival copies, and console disc backups use them. The source must be a complete image such as game.iso, not a folder containing files extracted from an ISO; a Wii target also requires an image made for Wii software.

What the CISO format is

CISO means compressed ISO in this disk-image context. It stores the source image's logical sectors in compressed blocks and can represent unused or empty areas efficiently, reducing storage without lossy changes to the disc data. The resulting file commonly uses the .ciso extension.

CISO is not a universal target format for every ISO reader. A Wii loader or emulator must explicitly support Wii CISO images. The .cso extension commonly identifies compressed ISO files in PSP software, but an application requesting .cso or .ciso may expect a particular implementation; confirm the target software's supported formats before converting.

How to convert an ISO to CISO

Using Wiimms ISO Tools

1. Install the current Wiimms ISO Tools release for Windows, Linux, or macOS.
2. Put the source image, for example game.iso, in a working folder and make sure the destination has enough free space for the source and output.
3. Run wit copy --ciso game.iso game.ciso. The command reads the ISO and writes a new CISO; it does not replace the source.
4. Verify the output with wit verify game.ciso. Retain game.iso until the target loader also opens the converted file successfully.

If the installed release does not accept the explicit --ciso option, use its documented output-format syntax and a .ciso destination name; Wiimms ISO Tools versions can differ. Run wit --help or consult the installed release documentation rather than guessing an alternative format.

Using a graphical Wii utility

Wii Backup Manager can read and, in releases that expose the feature, write CISO images. Add the ISO in its file view, select the image, choose its transfer or conversion command, and select CISO as the output format. Menu names and supported output types vary by release, so check that the generated file really ends in .ciso and test it with the intended loader. Wiimms ISO Tools is the more predictable choice for a scripted or repeatable conversion.

Online conversion

A local converter is normally the only practical option. Wii ISOs are large, so uploading and downloading them is slow, and a general online document converter will not understand this disk-image format. Avoid uploading private or copyrighted images to an untrusted service; no online converter is needed when Wiimms ISO Tools can perform the conversion locally.

Quality and compatibility limits

CISO compression is lossless: a correctly converted image retains the source's disc data. It does not repair a damaged or incomplete ISO, and it may save little space when the image already contains compressed game data.

Reading compressed blocks can add CPU and seek overhead on older hardware. If the loader does not list CISO support, use the format it documents, such as WBFS, RVZ, or ISO; changing the filename extension does not perform a conversion. Wii CISO is also not a general replacement for computer ISO images, so preserve the original ISO when cross-platform mounting or archival compatibility matters.
