Understanding DFT and PRT file formats

DFT files are typically associated with Siemens' DFT (Data File Template) format, commonly used in industrial automation and PLC programming to define data structures or templates. On the other hand, PRT files are most often part files used by CAD software such as PTC Creo, NX, or Solid Edge to store 3D part models and design data.

Purpose of converting DFT to PRT

Converting a DFT file to a PRT file is not a standard or direct process, as these formats serve different purposes: DFT for data templates and PRT for 3D part models. However, in some workflows, users may want to transfer data or structure definitions from automation templates into a CAD environment, often requiring intermediate steps or manual recreation.

How to convert DFT to PRT

There is no direct converter between DFT and PRT formats due to their fundamentally different uses. If your DFT file contains geometric or part-related data (rare, but possible in some custom workflows), you may need to:

• Export the relevant data from the DFT file into a neutral format (such as CSV or STEP if supported).
• Import the exported data into your CAD software (such as PTC Creo or Siemens NX).
• Manually create or script the part in the CAD environment using the imported data.

If your DFT file is a Solid Edge Draft (2D drawing), you can open it in Solid Edge and use File → Save As or File → Export to save as a PRT file, but this will only work if the draft contains 3D data or is linked to a part.

Best software for DFT to PRT conversion

• Solid Edge: For DFT files created in Solid Edge, open the file and use File → Save As or File → Export to save as a PRT file if possible.
• PTC Creo or Siemens NX: Import neutral formats (like STEP or IGES) if you can export your DFT data to these formats first.
• Custom scripts or macros: For automation data, you may need to write a script to interpret DFT data and generate a PRT file in your CAD system.
