Free online B5I to IMG converter

A disc-imaging program, emulator, or operating system may accept .img files but not BlindWrite’s .b5i format. Converting the image provides a raw disk-image file for software that requires IMG.

What the B5I format is

.b5i is the binary image-data format used by BlindWrite, an optical-disc imaging program from VSO Software. It stores the sectors copied from a CD or DVD and is commonly paired with a .b5t file containing track-layout information.

B5I images are used mainly for backups and copies of optical discs made with BlindWrite. Because fewer current utilities open B5I directly than ISO or IMG, conversion is useful when a mounting, emulation, burning, or archiving program rejects the original file.

What the IMG format is

.img is a general filename extension for a raw, sector-based disk image. Depending on the application, it can represent an optical disc, floppy disk, hard disk, partition, or other storage medium. The extension alone does not identify the filesystem, sector layout, or type of source media.

IMG is useful when an emulator, virtual machine, backup utility, mounting tool, or operating system expects a raw disk image. Its broader software support is the main reason to convert a B5I image; it does not inherently compress the data or improve its quality.

How to convert B5I to IMG

An ordinary data CD or DVD converts completely from its B5I file alone. The B5T file matters only when the source disc contains multiple tracks, such as data tracks alongside audio tracks. Without that metadata, the converted IMG may not preserve the original track boundaries, so retain both source files if reconstruction of a mixed-track or multisession disc may be needed.

Quality and compatibility limits

• The conversion changes the disk-image representation; it does not convert the files or filesystem stored on the disc.
• For a supported data-disc image, sector content is normally preserved without lossy quality reduction. The IMG is usually close to the B5I data size and may be larger or smaller because of format handling.
• Verify what the destination application expects. An IMG intended for a floppy, partition, hard disk, or optical disc may require a different geometry or metadata structure.
• Some applications need a descriptor file, separate audio-track information, multisession metadata, or a specific optical-image format. A generic IMG extension does not guarantee compatibility with those requirements.
• Keep the original .b5i and, when present, .b5t files until the downloaded IMG has been tested.
